Sample The study's target group was nurses working in medical and surgical units in the Czech Republic. The medical unit is a hospital ward in which patients are treated with drugs rather than surgery. The medical units included internal medicine, neurology, rehabilitation, oncology, haemato-oncology, pneumology, dermatology, and infectious diseases. The surgical unit is a hospital ward in which patients are treated mostly by surgery.

4.6 Validity, reliability and rigour The reliability of the original PIRNCA instrument was high at .97 (Jones, 2014). Its Czech version reached a reliability of .86 (Zeleníková et al., 2020). Both the original and Czech versions of the PIRNCA had been used by other researchers. The main investigator was available via email to guarantee rigour at data collection.
