These narratives, when we share them, have the power to inspire, uplift, and even transform people’s lives.
Today Devotional March 12, 2025 - Normalizing Our Emotions
TOPIC: Normalizing Our Emotions Scripture Reading — Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. — Psalm 34:18 In my younger days I struggled to express sadness or fear, thinking they made me look vulnerable. A wise mentor told me, “Emotions are like busy little children. If you don’t acknowledge them, they get louder and louder to grab your attention.
Today Devotional March 11, 2025 - Learning From Mistakes

The insights shared by mentors, friends, and even strangers have profoundly shaped my understanding of resilience and perseverance. When I was younger, I viewed failure as a reflection of my inadequacy.

This lesson is often echoed by the wisdom of mentors and friends who remind me that growth is a process, not an immediate transformation.

Today Devotional March 7, 2025 – Giving Our Best in All We Do
TOPIC: Giving Our Best in All We Do Scripture Reading — Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. — Colossians 3:23 As I think about what it means to give our best, I am reminded of a dear friend, a pastor who poured his heart into every sermon—not for applause or recognition but to honor God. His dedication inspired me to approach my work and service in a similar way.
Identity in Christ Is Our Strength
In the movie Black Panther there is a scene where rival tribal leader M’Baku challenges T’Challa, the heir to the throne of Wakanda, to a fight for the crown. T’Challa is losing the fight until his mother Ramonda yells, “Show him who you are!” At once T’Challa finds strength to turn the fight, yelling, “I am Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Chaka!” That scene stuck with me because T’Challa found strength in remembering and calling out his identity. He named who he was—and whose son he was.
On ‘Wakanda Forever’ and the Nature of Grief
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the excellent sequel to Black Panther and takes place after the real-life death of Chadwick Boseman (King T’Challa). The movie does a wonderful job honoring the legacy of the Black Panther (Boseman), to the extent that grief is an unspoken character in the movie. Shuri (T’Challa’s sister, played by Letitia Wright), has a very interesting response to her grief over losing her brother.
Josey Johnson’s Hair and the Holy Spirit
This children’s book by Esau McCaulley explores how God has uniquely designed each of us in the way we are made, inspired by Psalm 139: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” These ideas are explained to a girl named Josey Johnson who is preparing to sing in the church choir. Her hair has personality, which means it changes all the time. The description of her hair also describes her own personality, which has her interacting with family members in different ways.
Most Perfect You
I have an 8-year-old, African American daughter. I constantly say to her, “You’re my only daughter.” When she hears this she beams from ear to ear, because she can hear the uniqueness of that statement. She has two older brothers but they cannot hear that phrase because there are two of them. She knows she is special because she is my only daughter. Uniqueness is a theme in Jazmyn Simon’s book, Most Perfect You. The book centers around a young girl named Irie who is frustrated with her hair.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Grief and loss are constants in this lifetime. Even as believers in Christ we are not exempt from these life experiences. This theme shows up in Marvel’s newest movie Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth movie in the Thor series, which takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Besides many explosions and action scenes in these movies, there are deeper experiences that people relate to, such as redemption, mercy, grace, anger, pain, and resolution.

Dying and Rising
This story is based on a true story: Once upon a time there was a girl who grew up in a dysfunctional home. She had been raised by a single parent. As she grew older she saw her mother become addicted to drugs, and as a result she suffered from neglect and was parentified at an early age. She lived in a situation that made her the built-in babysitter because her mother often would leave the younger siblings with her. She missed a lot of school.
King Richard
When I was a child, my mother had plans for me. She told me she wanted me to do better than her. She meant to do better financially, academically, professionally, and more. She had seen potential in me at an early age to excel in school and knew that I could go far in life. She had these hopes and dreams for me, perhaps before I was born. The fact that mom did this harkens back to God’s purposes for our lives. He wants us to become what he has called us to be.
Hawkeye
I love watching movies. It’s very intriguing how I can see similar themes shine through in most of the movies or shows I watch. I just finished watching Hawkeye, a streaming series from Disney+, which is another spin-off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It takes place after the Avengers: Endgame movie. There are many themes in the show that caught my attention, like Clint Barton promising kids to be home for Christmas, his “discipling” of Kate Bishop, and the mystery-solving aspects.
The Value of Scars
As I Was Saying is a forum for a variety of perspectives to foster faith-related conversations among our readers with the goal of mutual learning, even in disagreement. Apart from articles written by editorial staff, these perspectives do not necessarily reflect the views of The Banner. The disciples were discouraged. Their Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, was killed just a few days earlier. They feared for their own lives.
4 Reasons Why Chadwick Boseman’s Death Hit the Black Community So Hard
When Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman died of cancer at the age of 43 in August 2020, his death hit the Black community especially hard. It’s an understatement to say that Black Panther merely inspired Black people. But it might be difficult for those who are not Black to understand why the loss of a movie star we have never met is so hard for us. Here are four main reasons why this is so: • None In a world where many images of people of color are negative.
