G. Darrell Hulsey has built a 35-year career as an entrepreneur and executive in the healthcare management field. Since 2016, he has served as CEO of Professional Billing, Inc. (PBI), a company that provides revenue cycle and practice management services to physician practices in more than 15 states. He directs a network of over 200 practices while continuing his long-standing commitment to charitable work, which has spanned more than three decades.
His career began in 1991 when Darrell Hulsey joined CompMed/Medaphis Physician Services, now McKesson, as a Senior Operations Manager. In this position, he was responsible for hospital-based physician practices in four states. His work included negotiating managed care contracts with third-party payors, managing operations, and expanding business in multiple regions.
After three years, he co-founded Medical Management Professionals (MMP) with six partners. Over time, he served in a variety of leadership roles. The company was sold to CBIZ in 1998, where he advanced to Vice President and later became President and CEO. When MMP returned to private ownership in 2013, he continued his leadership journey, and in 2016, he began working with PBI as CEO. During his time at MMP, the firm handled over 34 million procedures, $5 billion in client charges, and more than $2 billion in collected revenues. SEC filings showed top-line revenue of $165 million and earnings of $21 million.
In his roles at MMP, Darrell contributed to all areas of the company, including operations, compliance, IT, sales, HR, finance, mergers, and corporate governance. From 2007 to 2013, as President and CEO, he increased revenue from about $90 million to $165 million. He consolidated billing systems from 12 down to four, reduced costs by more than 45%, and decreased staff count by 35%. Earlier, as Executive Vice President of Operations for the East Region, he grew revenue by 83%, profits by 98%, and expanded into 10 states.
At PBI, he has led the company to 250% growth in revenue from 2016 to 2025. He completed five acquisitions, achieving 30% cost savings within 18 months of each, and introduced new technology such as AI-driven billing systems and advanced data platforms. His efforts improved collections by 15% year-over-year, reduced denials by 25%, and strengthened compliance with HIPAA and CMS standards.
For over 35 years, he has supported religious charities, St. Jude’s Hospital, and the Epilepsy Foundation of America through donations and volunteer work. A graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in Health Management and a concentration in Accounting, Hulsey has also supported his alma mater for more than three decades.
Born in Haleyville, Alabama, he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking, and traveling when away from work. Today, Darrell Hulsey continues to lead PBI from its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, while also maintaining a lasting commitment to philanthropy and service.
