On the move: How to build an AI-enabled mobile command center
A fast-moving forest fire or tornado doesn't wait for data to travel to and from a central data center for processing, and emergency response teams can't, either. They need reliable, fast communications and real-time information-gathering so they can coordinate and make decisions on the ground to stay ahead of events. Unfortunately, the traditional command center model, where information is sent to and from a central hub for analysis, doesn't work in emergency environments.

AI in Government: Why Flexibility Matters More Than Ever
Government agencies embraced generative AI (GenAI) experimentation with shocking speed in a sector known for slow, top-down change. Pilot programs popped up like daffodils after a long winter: Sudden, scattered and full of potential. As these early projects mature, agencies must make strategic decisions about how to scale their efforts best: Should they rely on public or proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) models, or adopt open-source alternatives? Each option carries trade-offs.
Smart, Not Supersized: Rethinking AI for Sustainable Government Services
As government agencies steadily improve their digital services, many see artificial intelligence as a way to accelerate their efforts. But there’s a catch: AI systems consume tremendous power. Tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google recently invested in nuclear power to meet their skyrocketing needs. While that works for big tech, it’s not a realistic solution for government agencies trying to balance citizen services with sustainability goals. The good news?
Rethinking Public Sector Data Centers for AI-Driven Digital Transformation
Artificial intelligence has become a cornerstone of public sector modernization, putting a higher importance on data centers, the energy they consume, and how to make them operate more efficiently. Generative AI models require immense computational power to operate. For example, an AI workload like a ChatGPT query can take more than 10 times the energy of a Google search.
Converging IT and OT Is Key to a Smart City
Oct 10 2024 Networking Cities must overcome cultural differences to maximize smart technology investments. Smart technologies have the potential to make cities more sustainable, efficient and secure, but maximizing their potential requires an IT and operational technology convergence that has historically been nonexistent.
Busting Roadblocks to Technology Policy
In a world constantly redefined and reshaped by technology, understanding the trajectory of digital transformation is crucial. The recently aired episode of the “Embracing Digital Transformation” podcast featuring a lengthy conversation with Rob Atkinson and Darren is an eye-opener on this very subject.
Building the Foundation for Public Sector Use of Generative AI
Establish an Ethical AI Framework No matter how powerful a generative AI system is, it won't deliver on its promise if it can’t be trusted. Generative AI solutions must be accurate, fair and transparent in the data they consume and the content they generate. Ethical AI ensures that data used in model training is secure and free of bias. It also governs user prompts after the system is deployed.

Analogamente a una ricetta di cucina, la scienza dei materiali coinvolge un’accurata integrazione di ingredienti (materiali) processati per produrre il prodotto finale.
How to Bring the Cloud to the Edge and Accelerate Smart City Initiatives
Jan 23 2024 Cloud Here are ways agencies can leverage tools to deliver computing to any point on a map. Local governments can finally realize many of the objectives they’ve been planning for the past few years. Much of this is thanks to rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. It’s now possible to extract real-time actionable intelligence and decision-making from virtually any point on a map. Yet the benefits of AI will only go as far as the underlying cloud infrastructure that supports it.
How to protect critical infrastructure in the quantum-computing era
One of the most infamous cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, or CI, occurred in May 2021, when the Colonial Pipeline was hit with ransomware. The breach resulted in shutdown of pipeline operations, a gasoline shortage and a spike in fuel prices. But the attack, which targeted billing systems, didn’t cause the shutdown. Rather, the pipeline’s operators turned off pumping systems over concerns the attackers could gain control of operational technology, or OT, and place public safety at risk.
PERSPECTIVE: Beyond the 5G Battlespace as DoD Works to Enable the Edge in a Disconnected World
It’s no surprise the Department of Defense (DoD) is investing in 5G as part of its modernization efforts. 5G, the current standard for broadband cellular networks, has transformed edge communication with higher data rates, lower latency, and greater traffic capacity than 4G. That’s essential in edge environments, which promise to decentralize data processing and data storage, and empower devices and applications to operate autonomously.

Four keys to managing public cloud cost
Since the days of Cloud Smart and Cloud First, government agencies have been encouraged to move data and applications to the cloud to save time and money. But has the public cloud lived up to this promise? The answer is complicated. The public cloud certainly has tangible benefits. First, you only pay for what you use, which can yield significant cost savings and lower operating expenses. Public cloud services are also generally reliable and very...
How a Stateless Data Architecture Can Enable You to Harness the Power of Today’s Agile Data
Technologies are sometimes categorized as stateful or stateless. The terms can apply to applications or communication protocols, for example. A stateful application saves data generated by each client session and uses it the next time the client makes a request. A stateless application doesn’t save client data from one session to the next. We can also refer to data as stateful or stateless. Traditionally we think of data as stateful: once it’s created, it always exists.
How Agencies Can Optimize for High Data Ingestion at the Edge
Apr 26 2021 Data Analytics The ability to take in and analyze large amounts of data in real time is critical to many agencies’ missions. Darren Pulsipher is chief solutions architect for the public sector at Intel. He also hosts a weekly podcast called Embracing Digital Transformation. Government agencies are collecting massive amounts of data at the edge, but are their systems optimized to make the most out of this information?
3 Keys to Full Spectrum Data Management
The internet of things has, to put it bluntly, blown the walls off the data center. A tremendous volume of data is being generated by connected devices, and it’s widely dispersed. It’s also critical to stakeholders. In 2019, public sector chief information officers and chief technology officers leaned into a multi-hybrid cloud strategy. This year, they’re trying to manage the data diaspora and volume that comes with it.
Reinventing data center security, from the hardware up

From hacktivists to organized crime to nation-states, bad actors are working around the clock to compromise government's technology, infrastructure and people.
Creating a secure, agile multi-cloud environment
The federal government is committed to investing in cloud services — a trend that will likely continue to increase in the foreseeable future. According to Gartner, government cloud spending is expected to grow, on average, 17.1 percent through 2021. Many of the agencies invested in moving to the cloud have deployed multi-cloud environments.
