June 26 (UPI) -- The death toll from a pair of strong earthquakes that struck Venezuela has continued to rise as the United States and other nations rushed rescue teams and emergency aid to the South American nation. As of 7 p.m. local time Thursday, at least 235 people were dead and more than 4,300 were injured, Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Alvarado said on state broadcaster VTV, Venezuelan outlet Globovision reported.

June 26 (UPI) -- New York City's rental board has approved Mayor Zohran Mamdani's two-year rent-freeze proposal for nearly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments, fulfilling a major campaign promise. New York City's Rent Guidelines Board voted 7-1 to set a 0% increase for rent-stabilized one-year and two-year leases commencing on or after Oct. 1, and on or before Sept. 30, 2027. Cheers erupted from the spectators assembled as it was announced that the motion passed.

Florida Gov. DeSantis announces closure of 'Alligator Alcatraz' Original

June 26 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced the closure of the embattled immigration detention center colloquially known as "Alligator Alcatraz," less than a year after it opened. "Florida led the way in increasing much-needed detention capacity and working with our federal partners to streamline deportations, removing thousands of the most dangerous criminal aliens from our country," DeSantis said in a statement. "Alligator Alcatraz has fulfilled this mission.
