NYS Native American mascot ban: Federal investigation into Connetquot district referred to DOJ

The federal Education Department's investigation into the Connetquot school district has been referred to the Department of Justice, after the agency determined that the district violated civil rights law by complying with the state's Native American mascot ban. In a letter dated May 29, the Education Department's assistant secretary for civil rights, Kimberly Richey, asked the Justice Department to "commence judicial proceedings" against the district.

America 250: How Long Island schools are honoring the July 4 anniversary

From a reenactment of Boston’s historic Freedom Trail to ceremonial tree plantings, school districts across Long Island are taking creative approaches to celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday. "A milestone anniversary such as America 250 is a generational event that brings a community and a nation together and we felt as a district it was very important to significantly honor this birthday for America," said Joseph Centamore, superintendent of the Connetquot district.

Five Long Island school districts where budgets failed consider their options

School officials in districts that failed to garner enough support for their proposed budgets on Tuesday night said they are considering their options, including new spending proposals, in the coming days. While 118 school districts won approval, at least five Long Island school budget proposals failed, according to returns. Results for the Roosevelt district were still pending Wednesday.
