1 INTRODUCTION Herbivorous insects, accounting for over half of described insect species, are key determinants of ecosystems functions, such as plant photosynthesis and productivity (Agrawal & Maron, 2022; Borgström et al., 2017; Yang & Gratton, 2014). Accumulating grassland evidence indicates that insect outbreaks are more frequent, driven by accelerating climate change (Liu et al., 2024).
