Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

As a graphic designer by trade, my first "journalistic" job came when I was employed by Triangle Business Journal in 2001.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I'm always at my computer or checking my email, so email is the best way to pitch a story idea.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My laptop, cell phone, and, at times, my DSLR camera.

What's your favorite social network?

There is no perfect social network. Lately, however, I've spent most of my time on YouTube.

Who do you wish followed you?

A lot more of the statewide wineries I write a lot about.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love telling people's stories.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I was one of the photographers and caption writers.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be genuine and honest. Too many people in my industry aren't truthful to their followers.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime is a good time to pitch a story idea. I'm always at my computer or phone to check emails.

What's your favorite drink?

Typically, it's a ginger ale for a nonalcoholic beverage of choice. When drinking other libations, a hazy IPA or good bourbon.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

When I'm not at my computer, I'm hiking, spending time with my two cats, and trying to find the perfect Old Fashioned.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Especially here in North Carolina, where I write a lot about the wine industry, a big misperception is that all NC wines are sweet.
