Hear the term cinematic, when applied to music, and you probably think of either soft, ambient background sounds or songs built on anthemic crescendos – music made at extremes, the serene or the sensational. Well, the real charm of JK Jerome’s latest song is that it seems to find a more scintillating middle ground for music thus labelled.

I love music which comes with embedded contradictions. Okay, such trappings and trivia aren’t the focal point, but they do make lovely little easter eggs for people like me who spend all day digging down into new music.

Fifteen years between albums is a bit long, to be honest. It’s not quite Sisters of Mercy territory (36 years and counting), but you could argue that you lose a bit of momentum when the gap between debut and follow-up is enough to raise a child or mature a single malt whisky. At least you might make a case with such arguments if Time In The Light was not so damn great. Good things come to those that wait, and all that.
