What was your first job as a journalist?
Sportswriter, then columnist and editor on high school paper in Manhattan. Hey, don't laugh. We broke some big stories.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Absolutely positively
How is social media changing news?
Everything is quicker. Duh.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent. Duh.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's an honor, a wonderful opportunity to perform a great public service if done right and most of all, the most fun you can have at any job.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I don't take pitches, honestly. I have readers submitting me a dozen or more story ideas a day. Pitches don't work with me. 1 of a 1000.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I have usual stuff, iPhone, computers in every room and a supersonic space transport machine, but lately I've been using my magnifying glass.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter
Who do you wish followed you?
My newspaper readers. I wish more followed me. I have hundreds of thousands in print, but many of them don't engage in social media.
Why did you become a journalist?
To help people!!!
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I started as a reporter, became sports editor, columnist and Executive Editor. At the same time, I was president of the school. #PowerBaby
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My marriage proposal to my wife, which ran as my Sunday column. I got her, her two kids, the psycho dog and a national first-place for that.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Never give up. There are a million reasons to quit. It can take forever to get that first job, and then forever to get that great job.
