Muslimahs On Faith And Women's Issues

Muslimahs On Faith And Women's Issues

wamc.org — 2014 has been a milemarker for women, especially when it comes to politics. While Western women have taken a step forward, headlines suggest women in many Islamic countries have taken two leaps back. In the West, Muslim activists have many women among their ranks, some of them artists, writers, reporters, educators and lawyers who want the world to know their vision of women in Islam. But women in many Middle Eastern countries have little or no rights or freedoms. Aylin Kocaman is a Muslimah commentator with religious A9TV in Istanbul. She explains different understandings and practices of Islam evolved over time.

The Cyclone That Murdered A City

dave-lucas.blogspot.com — For tens of thousands of people, the world as they knew it ended in the morning of November 8, 2013. "Life is a mystery... everyone must stand alone..." Simple, pure and true words - paraphrasing the fact we are born and we must die. My normal blogging activities were suspended while following this horrible event. Lord, have mercy!

E-cigarettes : Friend or Foe?

blog.casaa.org — WAMC News Radio Dave Lucas July 25, 2013 A decade after Clear Indoor Air Act severely limited indoor smoking in New York, the focus has turned to e-cigarettes - battery-powered devices that deliver measured doses of vapor to the "smoker" when inhaled. Sales of e-cigarettes are rising amid a big push by tobacco companies: Marketwatch is reporting that America's number three cigarette-maker Lorillard, which acquired an e-cigarette brand last year, saw blu eCigs boost the company's second-quarter profits by 10 percent. But there's debate as to whether the devices are harmful or helpful.

POTUS paints picture of optimism

POTUS paints picture of optimism

davelucasmobile.wordpress.com — The Associated Press reports that in his first State of the Union address of his second term on Tuesday night, President Barack Obama urged Congress to embrace his plans to use government money to create jobs and strengthen the nation's middle class. He gave the Nation an optimistic (in my opinion) pep talk, and his references to the Middle Class caught my ear several times. Obama's not the only leader interested in the Middle Class. China wants to "grow" its Middle Class, too...

Here's a Rant via Smartphone You Can Study Out

davelucasmobile.wordpress.com — Whatever your side of the argument is, understand that American freedom died on 911. And then a few years later along came the 'Great Recession' that put us all in a box, some of us now poor or near-poor, others homeless, everyone struggling and slithering like glass eels in a fisherman's trap. Nobody saves money any more. We want everything right now, while we can enjoy it, never mind if we can't pay for it we'll just slap it on the ol' credit card. We do this in case we get caught up in the next terror event or get rolled by a drunk driver.

Interview: Yuja Wang

blog.timesunion.com — Yuja Wang at WAMC. (photo by Dave Lucas) One of the most rewarding things about being a broadcast journalist is the ability to interact one-on-one with politicians, celebrities and others making headlines. Earlier this year I went to New York City to interview classical harpist Edmar Castaneda along with his wife Andrea Tierra and sister Johnanna. Although skies were sunny in upstate New York, it was raining in Manhattan! I had planned to record in Central Park, but due to the inclement weather, we dashed around trying to find a relatively quiet place to talk.
