Opinion | Tulips: gorgeous but deadly for dogs
Tulips are truly gorgeous flowers. The celebrated early bloomer is in the spotlight now — there are even festivals in Niagara that many are planning to take photos with family and dogs. But while there’s no doubt these colourful plants make a stunning backdrop, it’s important to note they are non-dog friendly. In fact, they are toxic to dogs, as well as cats and horses. The scientific name is Tulipa spp. The tulip derives from the family called Liliaceae.

Many provinces in Canada permit dogs on the patios at microbreweries, wineries, restaurants and bars. With the warmer weather around the corner and patios opening for the season, many people will seek to bring their dog with them. Some important points to keep in mind include: Ensure your dog is well exercised prior to visiting the patio.

Fake service dogs a growing concern
Seems like nowadays everyone and their uncle wants a service dog and the privileges that go along it. This, of course, includes a wide range of public access that accompanies having a service dog. This is a growing and serious problem. In recent years fake service dogs have become an issue across North America. While legitimate service dogs are highly trained to assist individuals with disabilities, many people are falsely labelling untrained pets as service dogs to gain access to public places.

Snow and your dog
When outside in the winter, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on dogs. Dogs tend to eat snow, but this can be hazardous, especially in places treated with de-icing agents. Although rock salt isn’t toxic, it may upset their stomach and can irritate their paws. Antifreeze tastes sweet, but it is toxic. Look for blue- or green-coloured substances on driveways, sidewalks and cars, and keep your dog away from those spots.

A little planning goes a long way in keeping things calm and happy for everyone. First, protect your dog from holiday hazards. Decorations like tinsel ornaments and ribbons can be tempting but dangerous if swallowed.

There’s good and bad when it comes to dog toys
When it comes to dog toys some are designed for interaction between the dog and owner and others are simply for the dog to self-indulge independently. Take for example a tennis ball. Most dogs enjoy chasing a tennis ball and playing fetch with their owners which is a great interactive way of having some good solid fun. Through playing fetch with your dog, you also build a great recall which is important.

DNA testing can provide insights into your dog’s health
One emerging tool that can significantly enhance our understanding of our pets is canine DNA testing. This straightforward process can yield crucial insights into your dog’s health, breed composition and behavioural tendencies. What is Canine DNA testing? Experts then analyze the genetic material to uncover your dog’s lineage and potential health issues.

Beyond kibble: Human foods can be healthy dog snacks
Not everything fed to your dog need come from the pet food aisle. There are many human foods that can make for a healthy snack for your canine friend. Honey in small amounts is good for dogs. I recommend smearing a small amount of honey in your dog’s Kong Toy for them to enjoy. There’s been lots of concern about peanut butter not being good for dogs. In fact, a small amount is an excellent source of protein for dogs. Purchase the raw/all natural peanut butter and make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol.

Viewpoint: Lessons to learn from Europe's smarter justice system
In May and June 2025, a delegation of Massachusetts-based reentry practitioners, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, and public safety professionals traveled to Germany, Sweden, and Norway to study firsthand how European justice systems approach incarceration and reentry. What we witnessed were systems rooted in dignity, restoration, and long-term public safety. These models offer compelling insights for reform efforts back home.

Take a look at what leaves your dog’s behind
While you’re taking your dog for a walk — and dutifully scooping up after him — you’ll want to take a close look once in a while to see what your furry friend is leaving behind. Healthy dog poop is a chocolate brown log shape with a moist, firm consistency that holds its shape when picked up. It should be free of foreign objects and an amount proportionate to your dog’s food intake.
