LETTER: More land not the answer to Las Vegas housing problem
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s land-use proposal (April 6 Review-Journal commentary) hinges on the flawed premise that expanding suburban sprawl into public lands will solve Southern Nevada’s housing crisis. Research shows that supply-driven sprawl increases infrastructure costs, traffic and emissions, without guaranteeing affordability.
Big Future In A Small Space: Wireless SoCs Enable Wearable Medical And Wellness Devices To Realize Their Potential
By David Renno, David Armour, Melissa Hu, and Sezgi Koukourakis The technology of personal medical monitoring is changing incredibly fast. As little as ten years ago, the normal way that a patient would keep track of general health indicators, such as heart rate and blood pressure, or specific indicators such as blood glucose, was through an invasive medical procedure such as a blood test. Such testing would often need to take place away from the home, in a local clinic or a hospital.
Calm before graduation
For the past four years, I have attended classes at Seattle Pacific University. From the depths of COVID-19 in 2020 to the gradual revival of campus, I have gone through the ups and downs of university life and am preparing to move on. I have finished my graduate school applications and am making plans for the summer. By all accounts, I should have accepted that this is my last whole month at SPU. I should know it is time to move on to new and better horizons.

Battle for my mind
Resilience is not an inherent trait – it’s built through constant trials and tribulations that push you close to a breaking point, forcing you to learn how to adapt and eventually overcome any challenge that life throws at you. I had to learn this the hard way. When I was a little kid, I had unending intrusive thoughts about a whole host of topics, ones that I devoted almost all my energy to fighting nearly every day. This caused me to act in weird ways.
Moving on from COVID culture
I arrived at Seattle Pacific University in 2020, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. For my first year here, it was nearly impossible to meaningfully interact with people or even go to common areas without violating some sort of rule or norm. It often felt like society itself was collapsing around me as the casualties from the pandemic kept rising, which wasn’t helped by the constant new variants of the virus.
Advanced Messaging enables WhatsApp
Available in public preview, developers can integrate WhatsApp Business Platform into their applications with Azure Communication Services Advanced Messaging. The Advanced Messaging SDK from Azure Communication Services enables businesses to reach more customers at scale and deliver reliable communications to users worldwide.
Oven pops in Gwinn
Featured Stories News Oven misfire causes concern among students David Armour, Staff Writer On May 16, students and staff were forced to temporarily evacuate Gwinn dining hall after reports of a loud bang, an incident that resulted in the fire department investigating the scene. Staff eventually declared it to be a particularly loud oven pop, which is often caused by overuse or an issue with the power supply, but is not a cause for major concern.

Featured Stories News Making preparations for post-graduation life David Armour, Staff Writer As the school year winds down, students at Seattle Pacific University are beginning to prepare for their life after their classes. For seniors, this preparation is especially bittersweet as they exit college and enter into a difficult job market where there’s no guarantee that they’ll find a good career.
The elephant in the square
April is sexual assault awareness month, and Seattle Pacific University has been making an effort to raise awareness through a variety of events and projects, most notable among them being a large paper mache elephant statue underneath a tent in the middle of Martin Square. This elephant in the room is intended to act as a point of interest where students can write affirmations and comfort victims of sexual assault, though some students have criticized the efforts.
SPU senate election results
The recent election for the vice president position of the Associated Students of Seattle Pacific between Esther Smith and Olivia Brooks resulted in a tie. This nearly unprecedented outcome necessitated a runoff in which the two candidates once again took to the campaign trail, resulting in Smith’s victory. Tied elections are an uncommon and unlikely occurrence and created an unexpected situation for the university.

Honor our elders and celebrate joyful moments
By David Armour Now that the closures of the pandemic have waned many are returning to regular schedules and making up for missed travel. I would like to remind everyone that it’s easy to forget that our elders took the brunt of illness during the pandemic. Especially those who lived alone in isolation from friends and family. For those who lived in residential senior housing, it was also a different time for people.
Dangers of extremism
In the words of Samuel Adams, “A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy.” Sadly, this statement appears to be proving itself in modern America, where extremism is on the rise and millions openly believe in insane conspiracy theories. Online echo chambers grow more and more divisive as sanity is gradually pushed back by radical content, much of it violent.
Azure Stack IaaS - part ten
This blog is co-authored by Andrew Westgarth, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack Journey to PaaS One of the best things about running your VMs in Azure or Azure Stack is you can begin to modernize around your virtual machines (VMs) by taking advantage of the services provided by the cloud. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is the term often applied to the capabilities that are available to your application to use without the burden of building and maintaining these capabilities yourself.
Azure Stack IaaS - part nine
This blog was co-authored by Aparna Vishwanathan, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack and Tiberiu Radu, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack. Build on the success of others Before we built Azure Stack, our program manager team called a lot of customers who were struggling to create a private cloud out of their virtualization infrastructure.
Azure Stack IaaS - part eight
If you do it often, automate it In the virtualization days, before cloud and self-service, it took a while to get all the approvals, credentials, virtual LANs (VLANs), logical unit numbers (LUNs), etc. It took so long, that the actual creation part was easy. When cloud came along with self-service, not only was it easier to create a virtual machine (VM) without relying on others, but it changed our thinking about whether VMs were precious or disposable.
Azure Stack IaaS - part seven
It takes a team Most apps get delivered by a team. When your team delivers the app through virtual machine (VMs), it is important to coordinate efforts. Born in the cloud to serve teams from all over the world, Azure and Azure Stack have some handy capabilities to help you coordinate VM operations across your team. Identity and single sign-on The easiest identity to remember is the one you use every day to sign in to your corporate network and check your email.
Azure Stack IaaS - part six
Pay for what you use In the virtualization days I used to pad all my requests for virtual machines (VM) to get the largest size possible. Since decisions and requests took time, I would ask for more than I required just so I wouldn’t have delays if I needed more capacity. This resulted in a lot of waste and a term I heard often–VM sprawl. The behavior is different with Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) VMs in the cloud.
Azure Stack IaaS - part five
Self-service is core to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). Back in the virtualization days, you had to wait for someone to create a VLAN for you, carve out a LUN, and find space on a host. If Microsoft Azure ran that way, we would have needed to hire more and more admins as our cloud business grew. Do it yourself A different approach was required, which is why IaaS is important.
Azure Stack IaaS - part one
This blog post was co-authored by Daniel Savage, Principal Program Manager, Azure Stack and Tiberiu Radu, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack. Azure Stack at its core is an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform When we discuss Azure Stack with our customers, they see the value in Azure Stack providing cloud-native capabilities to their datacenters.
