1 Introduction Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) are rare ecosystems, making up only 2.5% of the area of tropical forests worldwide (Bubb et al. 2004). Nevertheless, these forest types are extremely valuable as biodiversity hotspots (Bubb et al. 2004; Olson and Dinerstein 2002), carbon stores (Spracklen and Righelato 2014) and as regulators of freshwater supplies (Bruijnzeel et al. 2011; Bruijnzeel and Hamilton 2000).

Introduction The Amazon basin holds the largest continuous tropical rainforest on Earth, accounting for 20% of the global aboveground carbon stock (Malhi et al., 2006; Friedlingstein et al., 2023) and c. 25% of all known vascular plant species within only 3% of the planet's land surface (Cardoso et al., 2017; Freiberg et al., 2020).

Abstract Effective environmental policies for the tropics depend on accurate, representative scientific data. However, there is strong evidence from particular disciplines and regions that existing research is patchily distributed. Here, we show that poor representation of sampling and citation in some biomes and across key environmental gradients from all disciplines for the entire tropics may lead to flawed scientific paradigms and inappropriate policy prescriptions.
