CORRESPONDENCE 02 June 2026 In their Comment, Richard Heys and his colleagues note that gross domestic product (GDP) and the System of National Accounts (SNA) are inadequate in an era of planetary crises (see Nature 651, 883–886; 2026). However, their ‘net inclusive income’ proposal, like most natural capital accounting approaches, overlooks a fundamental problem: economic ledgers rely on strict accounting identities, which are too rigid for messy ecological processes.

Abstract Electro-optics bridges electronics and photonics and serves as a foundation for a wide array of applications from communications and computing to sensing and quantum information. Integrated electro-optic approaches, in particular, enable essential electronic high-speed control for photonics while offering photonic parallelism for electronics. Recent developments in thin-film lithium niobate photonics have advanced its use for electro-optics.
