1. Introduction The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a crucial cellular organelle that plays an important role in the folding and maturation of proteins that transit through the secretory pathway. Stimuli that compromise the folding capacity of the ER activate an evolutionarily conserved pathway known as unfolded protein response (UPR).
