Mining for data – the raw materials powering a digital economy
AI, digital connectivity, automation and cloud computing are driving exponential growth in data creation, storage and processing. While much has been made of the investment potential – and risks – of investing in companies linked to the new digital economy, it is worth noting that the data associated with this is not intangible. Behind every AI query lies a vast physical infrastructure that consumes energy, materials and capital at scale.

The Power of Purpose Laid Bare
By David Clancy & Alexia Sotiropoulou “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves” Eleanor Roosevelt In the pursuit of high performance, whether in business or sports, there’s an underlying force that goes beyond winning or achieving KPIs: purpose. Purpose is the north star that guides us through adversity, keeps us focused amidst distractions, and fuels our long-term engagement.
How to Craft Team Cohesion Amid the Chaos of Sport
By David Clancy, Richard Kosturczak & Ronan Conway ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ African proverb Cohesion is an invisible thread that binds high-performing teams together. Without it, even the most skilled groups falter. As Peter Guber, the CEO of Mandalay Entertainment and Co-Owner of the Golden State Warriors, LA Dodgers and LA FC said, “Without social cohesion, the human race wouldn’t be here.
Why you Should Seek Second-Opinion Teammates, ‘Twins’ and Trusted Mentors
By David Clancy & Richard Pullan “Your network is your net worth.” Porter Gale, former VP of Marketing at Virgin America and a leading business and marketing advisor In today’s fast-paced world, high-performing individuals and teams face increasingly complex cognitive demands. These challenges are not just about processing information but also about managing stress, navigating uncertainty, and maintaining clarity amid competing priorities.
Performance Institute

Imagine Draper, who is the currently the No 1 British men’s tennis player (currently ranked 20th on the ATP Tour) seeking that extra edge to stay at the top. His success isn’t just the result of raw talent or relentless training.
Fail to Learn, Prepare to Fail: Why the Pursuit of Knowledge Is as Important as the Pursuit of Success
By David Clancy ‘Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn’. Benjamin Franklin, American statesman and polymath The motivations behind a learning ecosystem You must want to create a learning organisation. It needs to be identified as a strategic and cultural pillar, and modelled from the top down. This gives it a chance. Imagine the locker room of a Super Bowl-winning team: how does this group go from ‘good to great’, to borrow Jim Collins’ words?
Ski vacation: ‘Gravity, tilt of the trail, symbiosis of ski, snow’
There’s a great 1963 essay called “The Sea and the Wind That Blows” by E.B. White. All he does is talk about sailing and why he loves it. Rereading it last winter gave me the idea to try something similar about skiing. You’ve done it a lot, the idea urged, at some point you should think about it. Why do you ski? What does it mean to you? Around the same time, I found a reflection on skiing that I wrote in third grade.

Stowebusters makes positive impact on kids
To the Editor: To the ongoing back-and-forth about the ski mountain — and the road to it — I wanted to add my gratitude for one of many unquestionable bright spots. My four children have been in the seasonal Stowebusters program for years. Vail has fortunately maintained this program through the initial acquisition of the mountain and through the pandemic.

We all age at different speeds - and scientists have worked out how to calculate it
A study has confirmed what many of us have been saying for years: age is nothing but a number. The researchers developed a method to determine the pace of ageing in individuals by looking at a range of biomarkers – including blood pressure and gum health. The study participants, all aged 38, varied widely in “biological age” and those ageing more quickly also looked older and reported more health problems.
Our New Building Should Say Their Names
As our Niner Nation grows, so does our campus. Over the past few years, we have added or extensively refurbished a number of different buildings. One of these new buildings is the University Recreation Center, currently under construction next to the Student Union. Its name is clearly a placeholder. At this university, naming rights can be given to donors after the building has been built. This can be seen in the cases of Wallis Hall, Miltimore Hall, and the Popp Martin Student Union.
March For Our Lives rally brings students together
On Friday, May 3, the UNC Charlotte chapter of March For Our Lives (MFOL) organized a rally with various students, faculty, and elected officials on the events that have rocked our campus. The event took place three days after a shooting on the campus of UNC Charlotte killed two and injured four, and two days after a shooting at the off-campus student apartment complex University Village killed one and injured two.
3 People Have Been Sent to the Hospital After Shooting at University V
From University Village Charlotte website Three people were injured on Wednesday, May 1st after a shooting at the University Village apartment complex. One was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. This comes a day after a deadly shooting on the nearby UNC Charlotte campus.
The loss of Marshall Park is not without criticism
Second Ward is in the midst of massive changes to its urban fabric, from a shiny new office tower on Tryon Street, to apartments on Stonewall Street. Another change has also taken place near the governmental offices on 3rd Street, the sale of multiple parcels of land to a developer called BK Partners, LLC. It will culminate in the creation of Brooklyn Village, taking on the name of a neighborhood mostly lost to the “urban renewal” projects of the mid-20th century.
Should we keep the “UNC”?
As of now, there is a lot of activity surrounding the name of our university and whether to keep its prefix of “UNC,” (which is a common abbreviation for UNC-Chapel Hill). In a March 13, 2019 Niner Times article by Megan Bird, she explained that a petition on change.org addressed to Chancellor Dubois for an alteration of the name of UNC Charlotte had garnered 2,484 signatures, and it currently sits at around 2,686 signatures.
Maintain our amphitheater
Nestled in between the endless oceans of parking near Lots 5 and 6; hidden behind gnarled trees and construction fences lies a scene of decay and neglect. Behind the Cafeteria Activities Building (CAB), there is concrete seating facing a blank wall. This forgotten structure has no signage nearby; however, it was clearly a theater. Previously, this structure was not so secluded as it was surrounded by the former Martin Village dorms. No doubt this stage was used for a variety of uses.
7 Steps to Safely Returning From an ACL Injury
The definition of rehabilitation is "to restore to useful life, as through therapy and education…to restore to good condition, operation or capacity" (Thompson 1995). Rehabilitation is indeed easy to do badly, and difficult to do well. A technically excellent operative procedure can be undermined by poor rehabilitation and vice-versa, whereby an average operation can be complemented by expert rehabilitation (English 2013).
The Missing Link in the Rehab Process
Forty percent of athletes who undergo ACL reconstructive surgery do not return to pre-injury performance levels, and 65 percent don't return to competitive sport at all. Furthermore, those who do return to play have a high risk of re-injury. So is it ACL reconstruction techniques that are the issue? Or are we failing to properly prepare athletes to return to their sport? I lean toward the latter.
The Mental Side of Recovering From an Injury
As a sports medicine physiotherapist clinician, I treat many recreational and professional athletes every day. I can't help but feel the psychological aspects of an injury are often grossly underestimated and overlooked. For me to help an athlete get back to performing at their pre-injury levels, the incorporation of a complete progressive bio/psycho/social model of care is integral to a rehabilitation regimen.
Lemurs may hold secrets to living longer, but they won't increase our lifespan
When Jonas the fat-tailed dwarf lemur died recently in captivity at the ripe age of 29 years, he was the oldest known of his species. But Jonas not only outlasted members of closely related lemur species held in captivity; he also lived much longer than science would predict based on his small size. A new study in the Journal of Zoology attributed this exceptional longevity to the fact that this lemur species are able to readily enter a low energy state.
