How Ashton Woods Homes Secures Its SaaS-First World with Falcon Shield
When David Cochran, Director of IT, joined Ashton Woods Homes eight years ago, the company had already embraced a fully SaaS-based architecture with no on-premises servers, networks, cloud workloads, or data centers to manage. As the company grew organically from 700 to 1,400 employees, so did its reliance on SaaS solutions. While the SaaS-first model still powers the business today, it has also reshaped its risk profile. “Everything we do is SaaS-based,” said Cochran.

Watching Christians Celebrate Killing
Five hundred years ago, Desiderius Erasmus hoped that someday Christian leaders would help create a more peaceful world by thoughtfully applying their faith to questions of war. It’s safe to say he would not be encouraged by the leaked group chat featuring top Trump officials discussing airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen.

If Iowa values religious liberty, it won't push private colleges to ditch DEI | Opinion
David Carroll Cochran teaches in the politics program at Loras College in Dubuque. The views expressed here are his own. One reason religious liberty is so fragile is that too few people support it consistently. Many, including lawmakers, only champion it when they agree with the religious values being protected. The real test of support for religious liberty is if you act to protect religious values you don’t share. The Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature faces such a test this term.
Making Sense of the Election
It is difficult to think how an election could be more bizarre. An incumbent president’s dropping out of the race just months before election day. His replacement? Potentially the first woman and first Asian American president in U.S. history. Her challenger?

The Catholic critique of war is hiding in plain sight
Those who put their faith in war dominate global headlines. Calls for invasions and occupations, attacks and counterattacks, airstrikes and arms packages unite those who embrace military force across the world’s battlefields and centers of power. There is, however, another view hiding in plain sight. The world’s largest Christian denomination — numbering 1.4 billion people, including President Biden — has spent decades developing a comprehensive case against war.

Blawenburg Band, Since 1890, Strong as Ever
By David Cochran | Posted December 14, 2023 In 1890, two years before famous composer and bandmaster John Phillips Sousa started his popular Sousa Band, several musicians gathered in the upper room of the Blawenburg blacksmith and wheelwright shop to play music together. They called themselves the Blawenburg Band. A greatly expanded version of that band is still playing today, 133 years later. It is one of the oldest and longest-playing bands in New Jersey.
Inside Supply Management Magazine | Competencies
When making decisions, we tend to rely heavily on or be influenced by the first offer or piece of information we receive. Moving away from that can be difficult. This is called anchoring, and it can have drastic effects on supply management organizations and their companies. It may sound basic, but the anchoring effect is surprisingly strong. Imagine buying a house.
The Case of the Missing Windmill
By David Cochran | August 17, 2023 It’s easy to misplace your keys or forget where you put your wallet, but losing a windmill? That’s hard to do and even harder to find. But such was the plight of the Van Zandt family, formerly of Blawenburg. Their property, called Broad View Farm, was a premier agricultural site in New Jersey for nearly a century. It was one of the first farms in Blawenburg, having been established in the 1740s by the Dutch immigrants Peter and Aeltje Nevius.
Monty Boy Scout Troop 46 Celebrates Its 90th Birthday
By David Cochran | Posted July 13, 2023 There is much to celebrate in Troop 46—Montgomery Township’s oldest Boy Scout troop. There are currently about 75 boys in Troop 46. Over its many years, the troop has had an outstanding record of helping scouts attain the rank of Eagle, the highest rank in scouting. On September 24,1966, Larry May became the first Eagle Scout in the troop, and since then, 217 boys have followed his lead. The troop expects five or six scouts to reach Eagle this year.

Catholics looking to get into soccer? Look no further than Liverpool F.C.
Jürgen Klopp, coach of the Liverpool Football Club, at the team’s trophy parade after winning the Champions League in 2019. (Pete, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons) “Come, follow me” is a common translation of what Jesus said in Mt 4:19. But I think he understands (or forgives) me when I say, “Come, follow Liverpool F.C.” There are several reasons why Catholics in particular should embrace this command. F.C. stands for football club, and Liverpool plays in the English Premier League.

Why the Russian Revolution actually owes its success to nonviolent resistance
Women demand increased rations in a demonstration along the Nevskii Prospekt after International Women’s Day, February 23, 1917. (Central State Archive of Kino-Photo-Phono Documents, St. Petersburg) Erica Chenoweth’s remarkable recent book, “Civil Resistance,” is another contribution to the growing mountain of evidence for the power of nonviolence.
Why the Russian Revolution actually owes its success to nonviolent resistance
Erica Chenoweth’s remarkable recent book, “Civil Resistance,” is another contribution to the growing mountain of evidence for the power of nonviolence. While armed resistance long enjoyed a rarely questioned reputation as the most effective way to defeat oppressive domestic or occupying regimes willing to use force to impose their rule, Chenoweth and others have done much to dispel that myth.

Arthrex: Unreviewable APJ Authority Incompatible with Appointments Clause | JD Supra
In United States v. Arthrex Inc., the U.S. Supreme Court agreed with the Federal Circuit that the pre-Arthrex Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) regime of Administrative Patent Judge decisions being insulated from executive review is incompatible with the Appointments Clause of the Constitution and therefore unenforceable as written. But the Court diverged from the Federal Circuit on the rationale for this constitutional violation and the appropriate remedy to save it.
Cochran: Proposed Iowa elections law change a transparent attempt at suppression
If Democrats controlled the state government in Iowa; and if they spent months talking up voter fraud made possible by so many small polling places in towns all across the state where shady things happen; and if they responded by passing a law requiring all voting take place in six large polling places — one each in Ames, Des Moines, Davenport, Dubuque, Iowa City and Waterloo; and if they defended this measure as necessary to “restore public confidence” in elections, pointing out that it did...
Couldn’t find a more logical argument?
A local writer recently (on Jan. 11) published a guest opinion column describing the death of a Charlottesville peaceful protester, Heather Heyer, at the hands of a man who drove his car into a crowd and the death of Ashli Babbitt at the hands of a police officer trying to protect members of Congress from a rioter breaking into the U.S. Capitol building. Both were tragedies which need not have happened.

PRECEDENTIAL: Stipulation Roadmap for Fintiv Factor Four | JD Supra
It has now been more than seven months since the PTAB designated Apple Inc. v. Fintiv, Inc., IPR 2020-00019, paper 11 (PTAB Mar. 20, 2020), as a precedential decision. Under this precedent, the PTAB applies a six factor, “holistic” test to determine whether, in the panel’s discretion, institution should be denied due to the advanced state of a parallel proceeding.

How Hitler found his blueprint for a German empire by looking to the American West
Native peoples in the United States continue to struggle for justice. While this year brought some important victories, such as Washington’s NFL team finally dropping its racist name and logo, and a landmark win in the Supreme Court for Native rights in McGirt v. Oklahoma, the difficult work of recognizing and redressing the country’s legacy of oppressing its first inhabitants continues.
Native Daughter: An Indictment of White America by a Colored Woman
As a Negro, I have been greatly pleased to note the haste with which the literary world has acclaimed Richard Wright, author of the book Native Son, as the greatest writer of his race. I rejoice not only because, like Richard Wright, I am a Negro, but because I am also familiar with the obstacles that confront young Negro writers. Even in the literary world, there are those who find it hard to visualize a black Bernard Shaw or a Louisa Alcott with kinky hair.
Letters | An exchange about the Armenian genocide, pandemic sanctions
UNLIKELY AND SELF-SERVING I read with interest Gabriel Said Reynolds’s review of Benny Morris and Dror Ze’evi’s new book The Thirty Year Genocide on the series of massacres of Armenian and other Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire and its political successor, Turkey, in the years between 1894 and 1924 (“What Turkey Did to Its Christians,” June). Serious readers welcome all new evidence documenting any mass slaughter—and especially about this, the first of the twentieth century.
Madonnas in Gas Masks
Some protest art directly appeals to Christian themes and figures. A painting of Mary with a gas mask and a halo of barbed wire (see above) is inscribed with the words, “Reza Por Lxs Que Luchan” (Pray for those who fight). There is an image of Jesus flanked by two Carabineros. He holds a sign that reads “No Los Perdones, Saben Perfecto Lo Que Hacen” (Do Not Forgive Them, They Know Exactly What They Are Doing).
Precious Protector
The politics are interesting and important, but Norman’s book is especially successful at narrating the spiritual dimensions of the Dalai Lama’s life and office. Insights into the Precious Protector’s contemplative activity, his appetite for learning, his desire to maintain tradition while dispensing with some rigidities, and his aim to serve as an “ecumenical” voice for various sub-traditions within Tibetan Buddhism are provided in illuminating detail.

Savers and Unloaders
We keep objects: “old letters preserved from the years when I lived far away, an ocean separating me from friends and family.” (Suzy Hazelwood) Like many Americans fortunate enough to remain healthy while working and attending school remotely, the Cooper family—myself; my wife, Molly; our 14-year-old, Larkin; and our menagerie of pets—has spent an extraordinary amount of time in our house these past five months.
Hagia Sophia: A Bridge Unlike Any Other
When the Roman emperor Constantine moved his capital from Rome to Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) in the early fourth century, he did so because he wanted to position his government more strategically at the crossroads of the known world. Of course, Constantine was more than a mere strategist; he was also the first Christian emperor and he privileged the faith through legislation, favorable tax policies, and the construction of spectacular cathedrals, including the Hagia Sophia.
The View from Iowa
The biggest political impact continues to come from the pandemic. The spread of COVID-19 in Iowa has been fairly steady since mid-April, with peaks in early May and mid-July. The state has never gotten the virus under control; meatpacking plants and their vulnerable workers have been hit especially hard.
A ‘Form for Failure’
While we may experience moments of clarity and insight in our spiritual lives, more often we face struggles as we try to shed old habits and find new ways of thinking about God. On this episode, poet Christian Wiman joins us to read and discuss several poems from his new collection, Survival Is a Style. He also shares insights he’s gleaned from his own struggles with faith and doubt, explaining how poetry not only delights us, but helps us become free.

Trust and world view in shared decision making with indigenous patients: A realist synthesis
Abstract Introduction How shared decision making (SDM) works with indigenous patient values and preferences is not well understood. Colonization has affected indigenous peoples' levels of trust with institutions, and their world view tends to be distinct from that of nonindigenous people. Building on a programme theory for SDM, the present research aims to refine the original programme theory to understand how the mechanisms of trust and world view might work differently for indigenous patients.
From Trotsky to Soros
As Paul Hanebrink shows in this thoughtful and informative book, the myth of Judeo-Bolshevism was created during the turbulent years between 1917 and 1923, when Europe was the scene of entangled international, social, and ethnic conflicts. By linking Bolshevism to familiar images of Jewish conspiracies, counterrevolutionaries gave their efforts emotional energy and historical depth. “War and revolution made Judeo-Bolshevism seem an utterly new danger,” Hanebrink points out.
