Op-ed: I'm an Omaha Catholic. It's immoral to keep pushing the green agenda
Attention Omaha Catholics! You do not have to vote for Democrat Mark Gudgel in order to remain in good standing with the Catholic Church. kAm*@F 2=D@ 5@?’E 92G6 E@ G@E6 7@C s6>@4C2ED r2C@= q=@@5 @C $2C2 z@96?] p== E9C66 2C6 4@>>:EE65 E@ 4@?E:?F:?8 ~!!s’D F?=2H7F= 2?5 F?64@?@>:4 }6E +6C@ A@=:4J]k^Am kAmx’> 6?E:C6=J E96 AC@5F4E @7 ~>292 r2E9@=:4 D49@@=Di w@=J rC@DD[ rC6:89E@? !C6A 2?5 rC6:89E@?
Midlands Voices: Nebraska should return to winner-take-all to show state's unity
Gov. Jim Pillen announced that one of his 2025 legislative priorities is to return Nebraska to a winner-take-all Electoral College state. It will be entertaining to hear the Democrats pontificate on why dividing our Electoral College votes by congressional districts is sound public policy. It certainly will be amusing to hear our solons try to match wisdom with the likes of John Adams and Alexander Hamilton. There can be no doubt that President Abraham Lincoln was one of our greatest presidents.
From The American Gulag Chronicles By Eileen F. Toplansky
In the mid-1970s I and others worldwide were active in a letter writing campaign to Soviet Jewish refuseniks. Anatoly Sharansky is probably the most well-known of these dissidents. While most of the letters were heavily censored, some did get through and it gave hope to those prisoners of conscience that the world was hearing them despite the malevolence of the communists. One of my treasured documents is a letter from the wife of Hillel Butman, who was falsely accused of being a spy.
Vivek in Iowa
If elected President, Vivek Ramaswamy would be historic. He would be the first Jesuit high school graduate elected to the highest office in the land. (See what I did there?) Since this author and the candidate were both beneficiaries of a Jesuit high school education, I asked him how this influenced him. He gave me a fascinating answer. The Jesuits speak of magis; Latin for more. Vivek said that he learned that magis means striving to do more and to be better.
How crazy have leftists become? Just look at Nebraska
I was elected to public office as a Democrat, and it saddens me to see what has become of the Nebraska Democrat party. My friend, the late Mike Dugan, was an example of how the Democrats used to think and vote. He served as the NDP chairman. Dugan was of the group I call the FDR/JFK Democrats. But today's Nebraska Democrat party has been captured by a group of radical extremists who are completely disconnected from Nebraska voters and values. I call them the Nebraska Jacobins.
Nikki Haley in Iowa
The former UN Ambassador and governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, appeared before a standing-room-only crowd on March 8, 2023 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The personal highlight for me was when I prefaced my questions to her by stating, “Before God and this crowd, I can say that you are a woman in her prime.” And I strongly emphasized the word “prime.” She laughed and thanked me. The crowd loved it. I was glad I said it. She has a great amount of energy and is a very hard worker.
When it comes to wind, solar energy, Johanns and Branstad are on the wrong side
I was saddened - but not surprised - to read the Jan. 1, 2023, Midlands Voices piece by Mike Johanns. It appears that the former governor of Nebraska, U.S. senator and Secretary of Agriculture has lost touch with his Nebraska roots. Like so many former politicians, he is now a lobbyist. The goodwill he earned from Nebraskans is now being put to use in service of big wind and big solar. Johanns works at the Center for Infrastructure and Economic Development; a lobbying outfit for solar and wind.
OPPD Board should repeal its net zero carbon policy
At the Nov. 17, OPPD Board meeting, I asked OPPD's directors to do the right thing. The requests were simple and in the best interests of OPPD's customer-owners. As a government entity without a profit motive, OPPD stands in a unique relationship with its customer-owners that the board continues to ignore. USA Today reports that 20% of all Americans are behind in their utility bills (Aug. 24). MUD has warned its customers that they will likely pay 18% more this winter (OWH, Oct. 30).
Pathways to Decarbonization could harm Nebraska economy
The July 28 Midlands Voices piece by the Citizens' Climate Change Lobby regarding OPPD's decarbonization policy left out many important facts that OPPD ratepayers would be surprised to learn. In 2019, OPPD adopted a goal to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. OPPD then created its Pathways to Decarbonization program. As part of that program, OPPD hired E3, Inc. to prepare a report that cost about $1.5 million. In February of this year, the consultant's report was delivered.
The two main purposes of the Second Amendment

The two main purposes of the Second Amendment

by David D. Begley, Nebraska Examiner
June 4, 2022
Recently America has suffered more mass shootings, in New York, Texas and Oklahoma. It seems as if these terrible events are growing in frequency. People demand solutions, and politicians will inevitably propose various gun control laws.
Midlands Voices: Don Kleine's record shows his dedication to the law
The writer is an attorney in Omaha. The duty of the Douglas County attorney is to seek justice, not vengeance. Those are two different things. I wish everyone could have seen the one-hour press conference that Don Kleine conducted on Monday. He dispassionately reviewed the evidence before him and applicable law. I’ll summarize the key points. The first thing to note is that Kleine and his staff spent all day Sunday on the case.
Midlands Voices: "Moneyball" techniques can transform ranching in Nebraska
The author is a director of Barger Drone LLC and an Omaha attorney. The Ramada Inn in Kearney, Nebraska — with its décor from the last century — is an unlikely place to start a revolution, but I saw it with my own eyes.
