Newcomers eager to take part in local BBQ contest

Each year, veteran competitors return to Derby's Smoke on the Plains BBQ and Music Fest in June. But it also attracts its share of visitors, and this year, a noted barbecuing couple from the East Coast will be making their debut. J.P. and Colleen Parran are traveling from their home in Wilmington, N.C., to show off their award-winning skills to the judges and attendees in Derby.

DHS seniors shine with robotics skills

Two seniors at DHS have notched victories in robotics competition and are using their knowledge in it as a springboard for their post-secondary education and careers. The team of Hayden Douglas and Maranda King have won 10 trophies, including two at the state VEX Robotics contest held on March 7 at Textron in Wichita. They also took part in the Global VEX Tournament, held from April 21-24, in St. Louis. The duo, King said, make a solid team.

Fair helps families with autistic youngsters Original

Many times, parents of children with autism struggle to find the resources they need to help their offspring. With that in mind, C.J. Barshear, owner and operator of Expressive Behavior Therapy (EBT) at 250 W. Greenway, brought together a variety of vendors and informational resources on the afternoon of April 25. "We gathered them all under one roof, and hopefully, there were some resources our parents didn't know about," she said.
