DP21424 Price and Prejudice: Preferences and Incentives in the Dynamics of Racial Residential Segregation
English Français Deutsch Italiano 中文 More Español Ελληνικά 日本語 Português Türkçe Schelling’s classic tipping model shows how white residents may leave a neighborhood once the minority share exceeds their personal tolerance threshold, causing rapid segregation after only a small increase beyond a tipping point. Yet this framework abstracts from two forces that may be central to tipping: expectations and housing prices.
Lessons from past trade adjustment policies to support displaced workers in the era of artificial intelligence
Anticipating that trade and globalization could displace workers, lawmakers and experts established Trade Adjustment Assistance more than 60 years ago in an effort to address that potential harm. Yet the program did not live up to its intentions, failing to reach many of the workers it was designed to assist—with significant economic and political consequences.

WAY BACK MACHINE - On the Persistence of the China Shock
Working Papers WAY BACK MACHINE – On the Persistence of the China Shock We evaluate the duration of the China trade shock and its impact on a wide range of outcomes over the period 2000 to 2019. The shock plateaued in 2010, enabling analysis of its effects for nearly a decade past its culmination. Friday, October 1, 2021 0 min read By: David H. Autor, David Dorn, Gordon Hanson,
Happiness is a Warm Democracy
It turns out there’s a significant positive relationship between democracy and happiness. “A more democratic system is likely to produce political outcomes that are closer to the preferences of the citizens than a system with less democratic elements. […] a greater exposure to democracy can be expected to raise individuals’s well-being.” So write scholars David Dorn, Justina A. V. Fischer, Gebhard Kirchgässner and Alfonso Sousa-Poza.
Changing views on trade’s impact on inequality in wealthy countries
The consensus view until the 2010s was that trade had little impact on inequality in high-income countries. This column reviews the recent evidence that challenges this view. Manufacturing employment contracted sharply in countries like the US and the UK which faced rapid net import growth from China.

The Impact of U.S. Imports on Manufacturing Employment
Executive Summary The effect of trade on the U.S. labor market is a highly debated topic, with most critics pointing to job losses in the manufacturing sector following China’s entrance to the World Trade Organization in 2001. It is likely, however, that the labor-market impact of imports changed since the “China Shock” ended in 2010, as global trade flows fully adjusted.
The China Syndrome: Local Labor Market Effects of Import Competition in the United States
Abstract We analyze the effect of rising Chinese import competition between 1990 and 2007 on US local labor markets, exploiting cross- market variation in import exposure stemming from initial differences in industry specialization and instrumenting for US imports using changes in Chinese imports by other high-income countries. Rising imports cause higher unemployment, lower labor force participation, and reduced wages in local labor markets that house import-competing manufacturing industries.
When Work Disappears: Manufacturing Decline and the Falling Marriage Market Value of Young Men
Abstract We exploit the gender-specific components of large-scale labor demand shocks stemming from rising international manufacturing competition to test how shifts in the relative economic stature of young men versus young women affected marriage, fertility, and children's living circumstances during 1990–2014. On average, trade shocks differentially reduce employment and earnings of young adult males.
American Economic Association
Over the last decades large firms across all sectors have been increasingly relying on contractors and temp-agencies to provide labor services that were formerly provided by regular employees in-house. This phenomenon of domestic outsourcing has thoroughly transformed the nature of the employment relationship for a vast number of jobs, ranging from relatively low skilled tasks such as cleaning and security to high skilled tasks such as human resources and accounting.
Competition from China reduced innovation in the US
Competition from China reduced innovation in the US The discussion of the decline in US manufacturing during the 2016 presidential election campaign largely focused on job losses. This column examines the effects of Chinese import competition on another metric for the health of the US manufacturing sector – innovation.

The China Shock: Learning from Labor Market Adjustment to Large Changes in Trade
China’s emergence as a great economic power has induced an epochal shift in patterns of world trade. Simultaneously, it has challenged much of the received empirical wisdom about how labor markets adjust to trade shocks. Alongside the heralded consumer benefits of expanded trade are substantial adjustment costs and distributional consequences. These impacts are most visible in the local labor markets in which the industries exposed to foreign competition are concentrated.

Why Obama’s key trade deal with Asia would actually be good for American workers
Opponents of giving President Obama fast-track authority to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) — the pending trade pact between the United States and 11 countries in Asia and the Americas — cite the job-killing impacts of globalization as a prime reason for their objection. The free-trade agreement would lower tariffs and remove other barriers to imports from member countries, which opponents fear would create steep competition for U.S. industries domestically.
How Technology Wrecks the Middle Class
In the four years since the Great Recession officially ended, the productivity of American workers — those lucky enough to have jobs — has risen smartly. But the United States still has two million fewer jobs than before the downturn, the unemployment rate is stuck at levels not seen since the early 1990s and the proportion of adults who are working is four percentage points off its peak in 2000.
