New Memoir by Michigan Author David Good Shows How Neurodiversity Is An Asset to Leadership
I learned to act while fear, pain, and uncertainty were still present. I also learned that some traits I thought disqualified me became useful in the right setting.” — David Good BYRON CENTER, MI, UNITED STATES, August 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Organizations often identify leadership potential through confidence, polish, and ease in social settings. That habit can cause employers and communities to overlook people who think differently, communicate differently, or live with disabilities.

Flashback: How Orville Hubbard gaslit Dearborn to stop a housing development
David L. Good Special to the Free Press No matter how enthusiastically he promoted his goal of “segregation, 1 million percent on all levels,” Orville L. Hubbard generally bristled at being called a racist. Yet the late Dearborn mayor devoted so much energy to race-baiting during his 36 years in office — from 1942 to 1978 — that he could hardly escape the label.

Reducing A New Home's Resource Footprint
An organized waste stream and the use of recycled building materials were key to keeping the trash-to-materials ratio low. By David Good Dec 27, 2018 In California, we are required to keep a tally on all of our job-site waste. Dump receipts are supposed to be less than 3.4-lbs/ft2 of your building. This is really hard to enforce. What we do is make it clear and easy for everyone on the job to recycle or dispose of their waste by providing upfront marked containers.
Minisplit Heat Pumps Efficiently Heat and Cool this House
Three indoor units provide the right mix of comfort and efficiency for this well-insulated but complex floor plan. By David Good Dec 27, 2018 Mitsubishi minisplits will provide all of our heating and cooling. We calculated heating and cooling loads for our home and found ourselves with an interesting challenge: The calculated loads for the home came to roughly one ton for the entire home. And while our house has low loads, it has some compartmentalization and is multiple stories.
Third-Party Blower Door Test Pays Off
Our house rater came by this week to gather information for the California Advanced Homes Program (CAHP) which will give us, maybe, a $3000 rebate. Unfortunately, the program relies on the California Title 24 approved energy modeling software that is not that advanced. Our house meets Passive House levels of performance and is modeled with Wufi Passive which accounts for everything under the sun. Energy Pro for Title 24 has several downfalls for a house as advanced as ours.
Camouflaging gutters and hiding downspouts
We wanted to hide the gutters all together but decided against it at the last minute. Building them in for looks seemed an invitation for a major maintenance issue in the future. It is risky enough hiding the downspouts as we did. Gutters often rust through in the long run and need replacing. Downspouts no so much. Our gutters are flush with the siding and integrate nicely with the site lines of the building.
Installing Standing-Seam Roofing and Cladding
We love the durability and look of steel, and so we used Bridger Steel standing-seam panels for roofing and cladding. But we hate the sound it makes when you cut it with a circular saw and the blood it draws from your skin. Nonetheless, it is satisfying to step back and look at the lasting installation of well-crafted job. Although metal roofing and cladding is fairly common in our area, we have had a hard time finding the right subcontractor, so we have taken it on ourselves.
Designing a Sprinkler System for a California Home
The next major drainage system to our north is the Feather River, where the Camp Fire still burns tonight—the most devastating wildfire in California history. And President Trump blames our state forestry management. I think it has to do with climate change, and that is why we build the most efficient houses we can and avoid materials with a high global-warming potential. Coincidentally, in the new issue of Fine Homebuilding (#280), Glenn Mathewson writes about fire sprinklers.
Staging a Construction Project for Multiple Labor Cycles
We own our scaffolding because we build with exterior insulation—and this adds several labor cycles before we get to the siding. Our air barrier is the exterior plywood with either the seams taped (like on the roof) or an adhesive WRB (like we used on the walls). Adding the exterior insulation adds several more labor cycles: first there’s one for the exterior custom window flashing (“jamb extensions”). Then there are two more for the two layers of staggered insulation.
Blower Door Test Confirms High-Performance-Home Status
I used to be nervous about the air tightness on our projects and do multiple blower door tests during construction. On my own house–despite the geometry–I was confident we would be airtight and I kept procrastinating the test. Finally, I got the blower door out as the finishes are happening. I forgot to seal the HRV ducts for the test and was momentarily puzzled that the house would not depressurize.
Windows and Doors are Critical to a Tight House
As I mentioned in my post about the blower door results—0.6 ACH50 by pretty conservative calculations—the windows and doors were key to getting to this level of air tightness. When the homeowners on one of our high-performance builds doesn’t have the budget for Passive House level windows we often use Sierra Pacific windows.
Locally Sourced Shiplap Cedar Siding
While most of the house is clad in standing-seam steel, we have some cedar accent siding on the west wall where it’s protected by a deep porch, and on the north wall where there is a nice deep overhang. This siding will add a nice handcrafted contrast to the machined metal on the rest of the house. The wood for the siding came from trees felled on property owned by Mela’s dad, Dan Guyer. Dan Guyer, who lives just north of us, milled the boards for our siding from cedar trees on his property.
A split-system heat-pump water heater
We’ve chosen an air-source heat pump for hot water. The Sanden water heater is a unique product. The compressor is mounted outside with the minisplit compressors and it shares many of the same features: slimline construction, inverter motor, and ability to operate to -20⁰F. The outdoor compressor is able to heat water to 175⁰F. The compressor on more-conventional heat-pump water heaters is located with the tank and typically means cool air is dumped in the house during the heating season.
Why do most passive house projects use European Windows?
We expect the air barrier to get us below 1.0 ACH50, but we want our house to have Passive House–level performance, so we’re aiming for 0.6 ACH50 or less. Past projects have taught us that once we’ve air-sealed the framing, the air leaks that we can’t address are through the windows and doors. Finding truly airtight windows and especially doors that are manufactured in the United States and that offer the aesthetic quality we seek remains an ongoing challenge.
Installing Rockwool for Continuous Exterior Insulation
On top of the air barrier and WRB we have a thick wool coat. Continuous insulation provides comfort which is why Rockwool calls it ComfortBoard. On the walls we used the ComfortBoard 110 formulation–which is a bit more dense than the ComfortBoard 80. We installed two layers of 2-in.-thick, 24-in. x 48-in. sheets with the joints offset. They are milled to high tolerance and easily fit tight. We used appropriate length washer head nails to place it.
Air-Sealing a High-Performance House
A tight building envelope is one of the most important elements of an energy-smart, healthy, and durable home. To ensure that air-sealing details are done right on each of our projects, every construction drawing includes an air-barrier strategy in Passive House style—a continuous red line drawn around the whole assembly to show where the air-sealing details intersect. The Good Haus is a fairly complex shape, with unique challenges for a continuous air barrier.
Thermally Broken Roof Framing
The finished roof over the first story of the California house will be one sleek, continuous plane when it’s done. However, we had to come up with some unique framing details to keep that clean look while also reducing thermal bridging. There are several roof areas that are not over conditioned space: the porch, the north overhangs, the breezeway, and the master-bedroom balcony. This created the need for several unusual transitions across the roof framing.
Subfloor sheathing
On this build, we used Advantech subfloor which has proven itself to me in the past when exposed to months of rain without buckling. New this time was their adhesive, which we all love. Applied with their long-nosed foam gun, you can easily butter the tops of the joists without bending over. The days of oozing tubes of adhesive messing up hoses, cords, and hands are over. As the last Trus Joists are put in place the Advantech is staged to sheath the second floor. The 28-in.
Framing the first floor over the pan deck
The first floor is framed with TrusJoist TJIs in a combination of both structural and nonstructural applications. It’s this feature that has changed up the sequencing compared to our normal builds. After we framed the walls, the second story, and the roof, then we went back to frame the first floor. The floor over the mechanical pit is the structural portion of the first floor and is framed with 16-in.-deep TJIs 24-in.
Framing with Engineered Lumber
On this build, all of our floors and roofs are framed with TrusJoist TJI’s of various depths and grades. They allow for long spans to create the open spaces in our modern design. The TJIs are lightweight–which makes them easy to place. It’s also nice to have the TJIs for nailing subfloor and roof decks because their flanges are wider than lumber and we get fewer shiners.
Framing Shear Walls on the Slab
This is not a normal house as you have probably gathered. There are two plate heights on the first floor and they are both beneath the finished floor. Where the exterior walls are close to grade they are framed on a stem wall. The plates of the other exterior walls are on the slab. We also have interior shear walls that the second floor bears upon around the mechanical pit and these walls are set on the slab.
Forming the Elevated Slab and Curbs
On the elevated pan deck there is nothing but a field of metal; how can we form a monolithic slab with stem walls? We’ll have to use what we’ve got. So, we cut 3/4-in. metal conduit into 1-in. lengths and welded them to the pan deck to receive our round steel form stakes both perpendicular to the deck and for angled cross-brace receivers. Around the perimeter on the north side we were able to use wood kicker stakes, but otherwise we needed to weld a seat for each stake.
Steel Beams and a Metal Pan Deck
We chose to use steel framing to elevate a slab over the land because of the seasonal creek that would otherwise cause issues in a crawlspace. Also, we are designing for durability (fire, pests) and zero maintenance. The W10x22 girders (10-in. flange; 22-lb./ft.) are supported between the foundation walls by 4-in. by 1/4-in. steel posts. We cut and tacked the posts for the Ace Welding steel crew who laid the girts with their crane and completed the certified structural welds.
Dealing with water on the site
On our property there is a seasonal creek that is mainly fed from runoff. Its path goes through our foundation! So we have an 18-in. culvert through the stem wall. While working on the foundation we made a temporary diversion (above) so that our work would not be flooded. The first big rain in January sent the diverted water down and into a neighbor’s pond, which then flooded onto her driveway and washed gravel onto the county road.
Pouring the house foundation
Pretty nice to see the foundation almost finshed! So good to ‘get out of the dirt’: or rocks and mud in our case. The Gates forming system performed flawlessly once again here on my 5th round with the 10-ft. HDO plywood forms. An experienced and dedicated man on the vibrator and a super pump operator on the hose leads the placement on the concrete and a team of finishers follows along straightening anchor bolts and hold downs and leaving a smooth and level base for our sole plates.
