Poverty is a big and profitable business in Connecticut and throughout the country and yet poverty keeps worsening. Part of that is caused by high inflation, whereby government grows without the formal taxation needed to pay for it, inflation being informal taxation and poorly understood. But part of it is also caused by the failure of the programs and policies government undertakes to ameliorate poverty.

I’m still reeling from a recent headline in The Day: “Officials: Parking garage not workable on Groton side of Mystic.” Here’s some news: It’s not workable on the Stonington side either. Who in his right mind would put a multilevel parking garage in a 19th century New England coastal village? Someone even suggested putting it on the Seaport Marine property next to Mystic River Park. Wouldn’t that look lovely along Mystic’s downtown waterfront? Parking isn’t the problem in Mystic.
