Answering The Problem of Evil
The problem of evil is a philosophical conundrum that suggests it is impossible for a being that is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good to create a world with evil. After all, this being would know evil exists, be capable of ending it, and would be motivated to do so. Non-theists argue that the existence of evil contradicts the classical understanding of the Judeo-Christian God.
Why I Love Genesis 1
Imagination is a magical thing. Close your eyes, count to three, and abracadabra, you can be free from life’s restraints. In the eye of our mind, anything is possible. You can be anyone you want to be and do anything you want to do. Stories come off the page, and faraway lands are a mere thought away. With our imaginations, we can do fantastical things, softly contemplate life’s hardships, deconstruct perplexing philosophical concepts, and even create things that don’t yet exist.
Materialism and The American Soul
For beings who spend a considerable amount of time in the world, humanity is notoriously bad at living in reality. Anyone who has spent time as a child will understand this experience well. I vividly remember the night I discovered my Dad was not the invisible man of steel I believed he was. Or that time near the end of my adolescence when I learned that actions don’t always come with a second chance. These cold showers of reality shape the people we grow up to be.
How Much Does a Soul Weigh?
In 1901 a physician from Haverhill, Massachusetts, named Duncan MacDougall became curious about the possible weight of a soul. As a staunch supporter of the scientific method, he decided to get his hands dirty and get to the bottom of the question. He reasoned that if souls were part of a person’s physical body, then they should have some physical weight. MacDougall conducted a series of very controversial experiments to calculate this theoretical mass.
Nobody Understands Sin
Nobody Understands Sin February 26, 2023 David Guill Broadly speaking, the Biblical concept of “Sin” is viewed in a legal-ish way by both people outside and within the Church. According to Meriam Webster, the modern English word “Sin” is defined as “an offense against religious or moral law.” However, this might not be the explanation of the concept. After all, in the Bible, there are several stories about people struggling with Sin before God introduces a single Moral Law.
The Three Jobs of Morality - C.S. Lewis
The Three Jobs of Morality – C.S. Lewis February 17, 2023 David Guill Suppose you were to ask a random person on the street to explain what makes someone moral. Odds are, they would describe an individual who follows the behavioral standards set by a culture or society.
Mount Athos 1,000 Years of Unending Prayer
For as long as humanity has possessed a connection to the spiritual, there have been those who have dedicated themselves to silent meditation and prayer. Christianity itself has a rich history of men and women who chose to give their lives to God through monastic life. Some live in large groups, while others, like the Desert Fathers, isolate themselves from all human interaction. It can be hard to imagine someone living a monastic life in the modern world.
Is Christianity Dying? South Korea and Statistics say NO!
It is not a secret that Christianity in the west has been on the decline for quite some time now. Unrelenting cultural forces, tragic historical realities, and a litany of other factors have dampened the old strongholds. However, as discouraging as they are, these trends do not spell disaster for God’s Church as it is seen in its entirety. If anything, the future of Christianity looks brighter than ever.
