Comprehensive Characterization of N-GQDs The nanostructure of the synthesized materials was investigated by TEM and statistical image analysis ( Figure 1 ). The top-down synthesis from black carbon (N-GQD (BC)) yielded heterogeneous particles with an average diameter of 5.26 ± 2.13 nm ( Figures 1 a, b, and g). By contrast, the bottom-up hydrothermal route from citric acid (N-GQD (CA)), shown in Figure 1 c, d, and h, produced highly monodisperse nanoparticles with an average size of 3.01 ± 0.41 nm.
