Middle school students issue food drive challenge

ST. STEPHEN – St. Stephen Middle School students rose to the challenge this year with their annual food drive. Students brought in more than 2,700 pounds of food to be donated to the Volunteer Centre of Charlotte County, which operates the food bank. The total amounted to around 5,000 items. This year’s food drive saw a first: Fundy Middle School in St. George challenged the St. Stephen students. The losers must wear the winning school’s jerseys.

DUFFERIN – The 12th annual Charlotte County Fall Fair originally set for this weekend at Ganong Nature Park has been postponed by two weeks. Organizers posted on social media earlier in the week they were watching the potential impact of hurricane Lee, however ultimately made the decision to hold off on going ahead with the event as safety is a priority. It will now be held Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Day of mourning honours those who died of workplace-related injuries

HALIFAX, N.S. — Families of those who have died on the job and people injured or sick because of their work, along with political and union leaders, met outside Province House on Friday during the National Day of Mourning. The annual event to honour the memories of those who lost their lives in workplaces has been observed since 1984 and has been commemorated at Province House since the early 2000s. Last year, 24 workers in Nova Scotia died in the workplace or because of their work.
