In 2019, Middlesex Water Company (MWC) began planning for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) treatment at its Park Avenue wellfield in central New Jersey. Later, in 2021, new maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), PFOS, and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) previously promulgated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection became effective.
