Maritime America: Sea Power, the Early Republic, and America’s Lost Maritime Strategic Tradition
Is the United States a maritime nation? Navalists are certainly fond of saying so. They point to America’s globe-bestriding navy, the global trade that fleet underwrites, and a maritime tradition that extends back to the establishment of the very first littoral and riparian settlements in seventeenth century North America. But today, tens of millions of Americans live in the country’s vast interior, far from the sound of crashing waves.

The time is right for Israel to question the nature of Beijing's Middle East agenda
Following the horrific attacks of October 7, 2023, a bloodied and bruised Israel looked to allies and partners for compassion, support, and assistance. In one of Israel’s most vulnerable moments, many condemned the attack, some sent materials and supplies, but China – one of Israel’s most significant business and trade partners – would neither condemn Hamas’s act of terrorism nor provide any help to Israel.

This Sino-Israeli diplomatic nadir offers an opportunity for Israel to reassess the merits of diplomatic and economic cooperation with Beijing. Following the horrific attacks of October 7, 2023, a bloodied and bruised Israel looked to allies and partners for compassion, support, and assistance.

Congress Should Create an Economic Statecraft and Security Commission
The United States has a few powerful tools to conduct economic warfare and strengthen its economic security. Unfortunately, many of them operate independently, without coordination, lacking strategic guidance, and sometimes without political leadership having an inventory of them at all. Congress should replicate its recent success with the PPBE Commission and create a similar Commission on Economic Statecraft and Security to further address this problem.

Economic Security is National Security
In response to the overt economic and political coercion by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the U.S. government has initiated strategic decoupling from the People’s Republic of China through the narrow application of export controls, investment screening, and trade restrictions.

Forget About Chips-China Is Coming for Ships
How many of the thousands of ships docking every day at U.S. ports were built in the United States? The answer may be surprising: U.S. shipyards manufacture fewer than 1 percent of the cargo vessels that ply the global seas. In March, U.S. labor unions decided that Washington had to take bold measures to support domestic shipbuilding and filed a petition to the U.S. trade representative, arguing that the industry’s poor state mostly reflects unfair Chinese practices, including massive subsidies.
Strategic Rulemaking for Economic Security and Statecraft
In the era of strategic competition with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), U.S. policymakers are largely united in expressing the need for a whole-of-government response to economic and technological challenges.
Safeguarding Data in a Globalized World
The U.S. has a glaring national and economic security risk which uniquely looms because of the everyday actions of normal citizens: generating data. That risk is that the U.S. does not currently have any laws or regulations regarding the storage of U.S. persons data on overseas servers or in the cloud. At present, huge quantities of personal data of Americans are unwittingly stored on overseas servers or in the borderless cloud because of cost, infrastructure, or contractual efficiencies.

The U.S. Must Use Its Export Controls
Secretary Gina Raimondo made a recent plea to Congress to increase Commerce’s budget to “build a more muscular” department. The secretary’s request to increase her budget will likely fall on deaf ears, though, at least until the department chooses to use its existing resources to achieve its stated mission.

The U.S. Must Combat CCP-Sanctioned Overseas Spying by Private Entities
After meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping in San Francisco last week, President Biden noted: “We’re in a competitive relationship — China and the United States — but my responsibility is to make it rational and manageable so that it doesn’t result in conflict.” Biden addressed challenges facing U.S. businesses operating in China, such as “punitive actions against U.S. firms” under China’s anti-espionage laws, but avoided mentioning China’s problematic laws that increasingly affect how...

How China Uses Shipping For Surveillance And Control
I was not aware that Chinese interests have installed operating software at quite a few ports around the world. Coupled with the Chinese Government’s mandate to share all information with the Chinese Government, we have an ideal spying network. Port traffic is a clear indication of material movements, and could give insights useful for military action.
How China Uses Shipping for Surveillance and Control
Ninety percent of the world’s trade is shipped , bringing finished goods, components, and commodities to markets around the globe. But maritime trade is not only critically important—it’s also fragile, easily disrupted by pandemics, port bottlenecks, or large ships getting stuck in canals. While maritime embargoes during wartime have been a staple of conflicts since the days of the Spanish Armada, today’s warfare won’t require a flotilla to keep essential goods from reaching their destination.

Protecting America’s financial assistance to rebuild Ukraine Original
Before the United States provides financial assistance for the reconstruction of Ukraine, Congress needs to obligate some of the funds to create a U.S.-led investment screening mechanism in Ukraine. Not only will this help cut down on illegal activities and fraud, but it also will keep U.S. taxpayer money out of the banks of America’s economic adversary: China.
Let’s use tax incentives to get US money out of China
Lawmakers and policymakers in Washington have made it clear that extensive U.S. investment into China poses a national security threat. The tricky part for them is figuring what to do about it. The White House and Congress are poised to roll out different forms of outbound investment screening regimes in the coming weeks or months. These proposals are largely based on traditional regulatory frameworks, which focus on telling the market what it is prohibited from doing.
Neil Sparks was a true American hero
Recently an obituary in the Tulsa World honored Neil Sparks. It was much too short. After graduation from Will Rogers High School, Sparks attended Oklahoma State University and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in 1959. In his more than 28-year career, he was deployed 10 times on various aircraft carriers, four times to Vietnamese waters, flying combat, search-and-rescue and support missions.
A Look Ahead at Restaurant Renovation Strategies in a Post-pandemic World
Throughout the recent pandemic, restaurateurs have been fighting for the survival of their businesses. But Americans love to dine out, and ingenuity has uncovered strategies for staying open when government restrictions have permitted. Remarkably, according to CNN, openings for new restaurants and food service businesses was down only 16 percent in 2020 from the 2019 data, and straight comparisons of the fourth quarter of 2019 to 2020 showed a drop of only 4 percent.

What is a database migration?
Switching from MySQL or Oracle to PostgreSQL – this is probably the most complicated of the “migrations” listed and often the one with the biggest business benefit. Tools vary from open source like ora2pg to commercial ispirer and they have varying degrees of completeness. A DBMS migration has to cover the schema, data, db code (procedures, views, functions, triggers), and application compatibility.
Mapping Oracle to PostgreSQL data types
In general, we recommend storing timestamps as time stamp with time zone (timestamptz), which is equivalent to Oracle’s timestamp with local time zone. This stores all values in UTC, even if the server or db client are in different timezones which avoids a lot of problems. But, some app code might have to be changed to timezone aware types – if significant, use the “timestamp” without timezone to minimize migration changes.
Autonomous Transactions in PostgreSQL
Transactions are an important feature in any database and PostgreSQL has them. We want to be “ACID Compliant” and ensure that all data is read and written in a consistent state. All changes in the transaction either commit or rollback together. You never change just one table, without also changing all the other related tables together in an atomic block. Transactions are great! Yeah. But … what about when you actually want to change just one table and roll back all the rest?
Copy Records in Batches with Postgresql
When you want to copy all the records from one table to another – for example, to change the data model or my favorite migrate data from a foreign table to a local PostgreSQL, you want to use multiple batches to avoid a long running transaction or the need to restart from the beginning in case of failure. This is a common challenge if you are copying data from one server to another (for example PROD to dev) or migrating data from another database (like Oracle or MySQL) to Postgres via an FDW.
Get AWS RDS PostgreSQL log files from command line
AWS RDS has a pretty good web UI in their console. It’s even got a log file watcher built in. But sometimes you just want to download your PostgreSQL log files from your command line, maybe because you’re looking for slow queries and want to run pgBadger. Or you want to script grabbing the last log file after you run a batch data load. Or you just like the command line better.
Don’t move your Oracle database to the cloud
Why move your Oracle database to the cloud? It just doesn’t make sense. You are moving to the cloud for flexibility, for cost savings, for ease of changing your infrastructure. Does doubling your Oracle license fee for AWS or Azure usage sound like Oracle wants to let you have flexibility or cost savings??
How to: Pick a PostgreSQL Python driver
Using Postgres with python is easy and provides first class database capabilities for applications and data processing. When starting a new project, you need to choose which PostgreSQL python driver to use. The best choice depends on your deployment, python version, and background. Here’s a quick guide to choosing between three popular python PostgreSQL drivers: This is the most common and widely supported Python PostgreSQL driver.
Thank you PostgreSQL for Secure Defaults
One of the most common questions from new PostgreSQL users is “how do I connect to the database server?” The nuances of pg_hba.conf and how to correctly enable your Python web app to connect to your db server without opening up connections to all users and all servers is not simple for someone new to Postgres. And architecting a secure multi-tenant SaaS system requires knowledge of how roles, schemas, databases, and search paths interact.
Relocatable PG RPMs
Relocatable PostgreSQL RPMs – You asked and we delivered! In our years of dealing with PostgreSQL users, one of the main gripes they have with PostgreSQL is not a missing feature or capability but rather it is the fact that the provided rpms are non relocatable rpms.
Holy Easy PostgreSQL deployment
In case you missed it, the BigSQL team released an awesome package manager for installing and configuring PostgreSQL and many related, useful components. The package manager can be found here: https://www.bigsql.org/package-manager.jsp.
PostgreSQL Replication Checklist
Replication is a key part of creating an “Enterprise” Postgres deployment, to support high availability, failover, disaster recovery, or scale-out queries.
Read environment variables from PostgreSQL using plpython
Sometimes in your PostgreSQL code you want to read an environment variable – whether to get the input file location for a data load, or check that the postgres user has the right path set, or verify that the TDSDUMP environment variable is set when configuring the tds_fdw to connect to SQL Server.
How Facebook Turned a Big Risk into a Very Big Success
This is a story about risk. Everyone loves stories in which the hero takes a big risk, throws caution to the wind, and somehow finds a way to succeed. Will Smith and Tom Cruise are millionaires many times over because of our collective love of watching such fearless, daring escapades. The business world, of course, is no different.
