A Discontinuity Analysis of the 2015 Introduction of Bushfire Prone Area Maps
1 Introduction Wildfires present a serious threat to human safety and infrastructure, resulting in economic impacts and public health issues. They damage utilities, transportation systems, and businesses, contribute to GDP losses and dislocate employment (Meier et al., 2023; Nielsen-Pincus et al., 2014). Smoke produced by wildfires causes morbidity and mortality impacts (Liu et al., 2015; Reid et al., 2016) and generates other, non-health-related ones (Meier et al., 2024).
California Beetle Jerry Brown
Scientists are naming a rare species of beetle in honor of former California Gov. Jerry Brown after finding one at his ranch. Bembidion brownorum was last seen in 1966. But it hadn't been named or described until one was collected in 2021 near a creek on Brown's ranch in Colusa County, about an hour's drive northwest of Sacramento. Brown, who left office in 2019, has allowed plant and animal researchers access to his ranch to collect specimens.

California Beetle Jerry Brown
This photo courtesy of Bembidion expert David Maddison, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State University, shows a specimen of Bembidion brownorum discovered by UC Berkeley entomologist Kipling Will while sampling for insects near Freshwater Creek on former Gov. Jerry Brown's Colusa County ranch in Colusa County, Calif. The Bembidion brownorum species had not been observed by scientists in more than 55 years. The beetle will be named after former California Gov.
Pointing and Pinning Block v6
Pointing and Pinning Block v6 Posted on 21 September 2021 by David Maddison I’ve finally revised the 3D design of pointing and pinning block mentioned in my previous post. This new version of the block has the standard holes of a pinning block (in the center of each level) as well as holes around the outside. Pointing and pinning block, printed by Shapeways. The holes near the edge of each level are for insects glued onto standard points (small paper triangles).
The Tree of Life Web Project: 25 years online
The Tree of Life Web Project: 25 years online Posted on 16 November 2019 by David Maddison On 16 November 1994, we first made public the prototype version of the Tree of Life Web Project. At that time, it was a series of static web pages, with trees made out of text characters, created by a special version of MacClade. This was more than three years before Google existed, and more than a year before the research project that led to Google began.
Discovering Insect Species: state of the art in Trepanedoris
As mentioned in my previous post, I outlined the state of the art in Trepanedoris research to the students. Here’s the story I told them. (As the class will be focusing on Trepanedoris in North America, my overview will only cover the New World species.) I’ve already documented the published history of taxonomic research on Trepanedoris.
Sharing the joy of discovery
Ten undergraduate students, my graduate student John Sproul, and me. Over the next ten weeks we will go into the field, find beetles, look at them under the microscope, do dissections, photograph them, make predictions about species boundaries, extract their DNA, PCR some genes, get them sequenced, see gene trees that result, database and blog the results, generate new ideas about species boundaries, decide on more field work, and repeat.
A Love of Leptoferonia
For many years I had wondered who Hilary A. Hacker was. In the carabidological literature she appeared on the scene in 1968 with the publication of one of the best revisions of a carabid group that had been done to date, and then she just as quickly disappeared. Her work “The Species of the Subgenus Leptoferonia Casey (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Pterostichus)”, published in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum, is a very thorough work.
