On Thursday, March 28, 2024, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and the Office of Management & Budget (OMB) announced a sweeping new policy to promote the safe use of AI by the federal government. The policy includes three binding requirements that mandates all federal agencies: to provide concrete safeguards against AI harm; to provide transparency for AI use cases; and to appoint a Chief AI Officer.

On Thursday 3/28/24, to further the Biden-Harris new Executive Order on AI, U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young sent a memorandum to all federal agencies, directing them to name Chief AI Officers and to advance AI governance and innovation while managing AI risks in US government. The OMB memo mandates that each federal agency must designate a Chief AI Officer (CAIO) within 60 days.

In October, I had the good fortune to be an IBM Analytics Insider at IBM’s World of Watson event in Las Vegas. As projected in our 2014 CDO Talent Map, the CDO Club forecasts that the number of Chief Digital Officers will double again this year, growing to some 1,000 CDOs by the end of 2014. The CDO Club also projects that there will be more than 200 Chief Data Officers by year end.
