To the editor: As I was traveling north on the Steese Highway on Wednesday afternoon, April 10, 2024, after crossing the Johansen Expressway intersection and coming around the turn approaching Farmers Loop, I notice up ahead the flashing lights of a Black Gold transport truck hauling Kinross ore from the Manh Choh mine. In addition, a D8 bucket loader was just merging left to get into the turn lanes, and I thought to do the same as not to be hindered when the signal lights changed.

After months of overwhelming testimony against the Manh Choh ore hauling plan, why does this project continue to move forward? How is it that this project, being a substantial development, has not undergone proper environmental review in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act? Kinross/Contago Ore/Peak Gold, LLC/Joint Venture (KCP) recognizes that a proper environmental review would substantially slow this project down.

Manh Choh's premature permit applications

To the editor: Peak Gold LLC along with Kinross/Contago Ore joint venture are requesting permit approvals for a waste management plan from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and a reclamation plan from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, collectively herein referred to as Alaska, for the Manh Choh gold mine project. Alaska invites comments on these permits on or before March 13 to bit.ly/3IAGsh7.
