Consumption site research shows surprising result

Premier Wab Kinew’s government is having some difficulty in opening their promised supervised consumption site. He can at least be reassured that there will be much less difficulty if it never goes ahead. That’s not politics talking. Nor ideology. It’s science. And evidence. It’s all contained in a just-published study in the medical journal Addiction for the Society for the Study of Addiction. The journal has been around since 1884, so it has some game on these matters.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the world is being run by hegemons. “We live in an era of great power rivalry,” he said in his now-famous Davos speech, where those countries assert their economic, political and military strength to dominate the less powerful. This is only half the story. Countries have interests, but they don’t act without direction. They are driven to do the things their leaders dictate.

Early in his speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prime Minister Mark Carney sets the context. “Let me be direct: We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.” The second part of that statement was widely quoted. But the first part, “let me be direct,” could have been the working title for the whole thing. If you haven’t read the full text or watched the video, I suggest you do. You’re going to see what “elbows up” really looks like.
