Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Working for my student newspaper - The Gazette - as the entertainment editor. We published four times a week.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Not to write anything I've published, but I have an antique Remington that sits in my office as inspiration.

How is social media changing news?

Social media is changing the way many people receive news. It's immediate, which means less checks & balances & more chance for errors.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a journalist requires a keen eye for detail, a curiosity to seek out the stories behind the stories with objectivity & integrity.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is the best way to pitch me. Always better if you've done your research and know what I cover/like.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word, Moleskin notebooks, pens & a curious mind.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Who do you wish followed you?

Jimmy Buffett & Neil Young - two of my musical idols. On a serious note, I wish for anyone who shares my values to follow me.

Why did you become a journalist?

I loved writing and reading. English was always my best subject. I was also curious & loved telling stories. It was a natural calling.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We did not have a high school newspaper. I did write for my university paper; I was the Entertainment Editor in my final year.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Never give up. Be curious. Follow your passions. Ask the tough questions others are not wiling to ask. Do it all with integrity.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee

The New Yorker
