Cheesy Bureaucracy: Noodle Nonsense in Mac & Government
The Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 Chapter 1 Subchapter B Part 139 reads: “Macaroni is the macaroni product the units of which are tube-shaped and more than 0.11 inch but not more than 0.27 inch in diameter.” The beauty of this passage, of course, lies in its production. Imagine an agency staffer sitting in their small, gray cubicle. Indistinguishable from all the others that fill some Kafkaesque hellscape.
What's Holding Up Genetically Modified Livestock?
FDA and USDA should create a clearly defined, common sense regulatory framework for genetically modified livestock so firms and researchers can operate instead of stagnate. USDA should engage with livestock farmers and meat processors about the changing world of meat production so that firms are (relatively) prepared for the eventual market expansion. FDA has been publicly developing their regulatory capacity for lab-grown meat since at least 2018.
Incentivizing Conservation Outcomes On Farmland
By Patricia Patnode Harry Huntley’s essay offers some specific suggestions for how to incentivize conservation results on American farmland. This is an especially pressing issue because most modern industrial farming practices, often driven by the demand for specific crops like ethanol corn, involve heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, as well as large-scale irrigation.
Farmers, Cover Up With Cover Crops
Perpetual two crop rotations are environmentally destructive, yet incentivized by government subsidies. Soil erosion is a growing problem. To preempt heavy handed regulation when we eventually reach a soil-health crisis, we should release the crop market from captivity. Farmers respond to market prices, the government should be mindful of distorting incentives.
Nobody Is Poisoning Your Groceries
TikTok and Instagram are rife with travel vloggers complaining about U.S. food while sampling dishes from other countries. To be fair, our shelf-stable food producers are less restricted in their production process than their European counterparts, but that doesn't mean that all of our food is "making us sick" like some claim. Food labeling requirements are quite strict, there is no mystery when you buy a bag of licorice. The ingredient list is right there, available to Google in the grocery aisle.
Protecting Commuter Rail From New Security Threats – InsideSources
We have denied state-backed companies from the Middle East from buying our ports, including in Newark, N.J. We have taken actions against companies from China and Russia that are run by former members of their military, as they tried to embed themselves in our domestic telecoms and software security industries. Yet we have been severely lacking in our efforts thus far to secure our commuter rail systems, which are equally important to our critical infrastructure.
