Breezy and sunny, the Northside celebrates a weekend of Juneteenth festivities

Northsiders got a headstart on the Juneteenth celebrations with events this past weekend at Shiloh Temple International Ministries, Bethune Park and Webber Park. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in 1865. African Americans started using the term – a mashup of the date June 19 – in the late 1800s to celebrate their freedom. It is now a federal holiday.

By Ta’Khya Carlisle, North News Intern Norijah Alexander, 19, started her freshman year at St. Catherine's University last fall. She entered a classroom optimistic, but left uneasy, being one of the few Black women in the room. As she began to navigate a new part of her life, she struggled with her identity. She felt she needed to act a certain way. When she tried to look back on the things that grounded her, there was a hole. “I feel like I have to be more responsible,” she said.

By Clarence Ransom, North News Intern Cervante Bell, 17, walked to North Commons Park in January and saw a group of people screaming at each other. Cervante and his friends watched the group walk into an alley. Soon after, gunshots followed. “We genuinely didn’t care,” he said. Cervante, a Northsider, said he’d grown desensitized to the sound of gunshots due to how frequently they occur.
