If you’re a Stephen King fan, you’re probably familiar with private investigator Holly Gibney. She played a supporting role in the Bill Hodges trilogy, and took centre stage in 2023’s Holly. That was a terrific novel, and Never Flinch (Scribner, 448 pages, $28), Gibney’s second star turn, is even better. Holly’s juggling a couple of cases, including an off-the-books investigation into a potential serial killer, and nothing seems to be going even remotely smoothly.

Kang Jiyoung’s Mrs. Shim is a Killer (Harper Perennial, 320 pages, $25), originally published in Korea in 2010, is absolutely delightful. Shim Eunok, a 52-year-old widow and mother of two, is barely making ends meet. When the butcher shop at which she works closes unexpectedly, throwing her out of work, Mrs. Shim answers a help-wanted ad posted by the Smile Private Detective Agency. Much to her surprise, she’s hired on as a contract killer. What a charming character is Mrs.

Virginia family entangled with thugs

S.A. Cosby’s thriller King of Ashes (Flatiron Books, 352 pages, $26) might be his best novel, which is a big deal if you know Cosby’s books, because his other ones (Razorblade Tears, for example, a brilliant tale of revenge) are magnificent… like Elmore Leonard-level magnificent. Cosby writes about the people of rural Virginia, where he was born and still lives.
