It was an emotional night at Rogers Arena on Tuesday night as the Vancouver Canucks honoured the life and legacy of former player and broadcaster John Garrett, lovingly known as “Cheech.” Garrett’s exit from the Canucks’ regional broadcast booth in April 2023 was no doubt a sad moment in the franchise’s history, but nothing compares to the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague.

You rarely get slow news days once the NHL season starts, but today was one of them. Today was one of those days when there wasn’t much to report from Vancouver Canucks practice. The club practiced in Tampa Bay ahead of their Saturday matinee matchup with the Lightning, but there were no updates on anything like line combinations, power play personnel, or projected scratches (the normal stuff we look for at practices).

The Vancouver Canucks have placed centre Aatu Räty on NHL waivers for Wednesday, October 14th. Räty, 23, has appeared in just four of the Canucks’ eight games so far this season and has scored one goal, an empty-netter, in the Canucks’ 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Räty’s waiver placement isn’t entirely surprising given his usage right from day one of training camp and into the opening weeks of the season.

The Canucks were a bit sluggish to start the third. The BRÖ line came out, did a beautiful job of cycling the puck around, and Jamie Oleksiak streaked to the net and deflected a hard pass just wide of the goal.
