A planning dispute was resolved in secret after journalists were removed from a meeting in which it was discussed. The North West Evening Mail has reported Westmorland and Furness Council decide not to contest a developer’s appeal without explaining why. The decision effectively clears the way for 35 new homes to be built in the village of Allithwaite, without any affordable housing, was taken at a planning committee meeting on 30 April.

Ex-BBC radio host dies before facing rape and child sex offence trial

A former local radio presenter has died before facing trial for more than 30 offences including rape. Brian Shuttlewood, who presented on BBC Radio Leicester between 1978 and 1995, had pleaded not guilty to the charges, which includes alleged sex offences against children. It was previously heard in court that Shuttlewood, who was 79, had advanced prostate cancer.

A regional daily has opened up on its decision not to name a spy caught up in a footballing scandal. Southern Daily Echo football reporter Alfie House, pictured, has written about the Southampton FC spying scandal that saw them thrown out of the English Football League Championship’s play-offs. Southampton were charged by the EFL with misconduct following the discovery of a member of staff being caught spying on Middlesbrough FC’s training.
