Block SMS Text Spam with Nomorobo
Have you been getting more SMS spam? If not, count yourself lucky, because my SMS spam load has gone through the roof recently. Apple's built-in option to filter unknown senders did what it promised but forced me to sort through all the texts from unknown senders for legitimate messages. I tried several SMS spam filters, none of which caught much of anything. Eventually, I settled on the longstanding call-protection service Nomorobo, which reined in the problem.
Why Did Apple Change the watchOS 10 Interface?
Some operating system releases mainly offer refinements and clean up details behind the scenes, like the mythical Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (in fact, Michael Steeber and Jeff Johnson suggest it was a myth). Other releases introduce major user interface changes, like iOS 7. watchOS 10 falls into the latter category. Many users have welcomed its interface changes, but others thought the old interface was just fine, thank you.
H2 2023: key forex trading strategies for the coming six months
The first six months of 2023 have been turbulent for traders. And especially in forex trading, where interest rates continue to be shaken up by central banks across major economies. The Federal Reserve’s (Fed) rate sits at 5.25 per cent and the European Central Bank’s (ECB) at 4 per cent – with further hikes already seen as inevitable by many market participants. That said, there’s been major coverage of the looming plateaus in central bank rates, before falling as we move into next year.
33 Years of TidBITS: Handcrafted Content from Humans
33 years. That's how long I've been publishing TidBITS, starting in April 1990. Last year was the closest I've come to shutting TidBITS down, but with changes that came late in the year, I'm more enthused about TidBITS than I have been in quite some time. Here's why.

Silver price hits a nine-year high and inflation is only partly to blame: an OctaFX analysis
Silver reserves and production have not kept up with the increased demand for green energy. In just 20 years, reserves could be completely depleted, leading to skyrocketing silver prices. The global economy’s focus on transition to clean energy is creating an additional demand for silver, which is used in solar panels and EVs, that will only grow in the future. According to Silver Institute research, 2023 will be the year of the biggest-in-decades deficit in the physical silver market.

The Art of Trading: Why human emotion still reigns supreme
By David Shayer, Vantage UK CEO. By David Shayer, Vantage UK CEO In many ways, trading is an art form. It is a skill mastered through painstaking dedication, often over a lifetime. For traders, their knowledge and the trading strategies they have spent years perfecting are their masterpieces – their own Mona Lisa’s. But just like in the world of art, artificial intelligence (AI) is a growing force of disruption in trading.
ChatGPT: The Future of AI Is Here
Artificial intelligence (AI) has progressed in fits and starts for 70 years. It's one of those technologies, like commercial fusion power, that's always 20 years away. Now we may actually be on the cusp of an AI revolution. But it's not the one you're expecting. We've become accustomed to machine learning (ML), where a neural network is trained on a large number of samples until it can recognize items on its own. Google and Apple use ML to identify objects in your pictures.

What can traders learn from Extreme E?
Co-written by Devin de Vries, CEO at WhereIsMyTransport and Martin Soderberg, Partner at Spear Capital The idea that emerging markets need to develop sustainably is hardly new. Rooted in the observation that a “development at any cost” simply isn’t tenable in the long term, its case has been bolstered by global efforts to avert climate catastrophe. For a long time, however, the prevailing logic was that sustainable development comes at a cost, especially when it comes to investor returns.
Four Reasons Why We Won’t See Third-Party Apple Watch Faces (And What Apple Is Doing Instead)
Apple Watch users have wanted third-party watch faces since the Apple Watch was introduced in 2015, and developers have wanted to create custom watch faces for just as long. But despite the pleas of users, developers, and a well-known podcaster, they’re probably not coming. As an Apple software engineer, I worked on the first two releases of watchOS, so I’m familiar with many of the Apple Watch’s internal trade-offs.
Wait ... Apple Helped the U.S. Government Build a Top-Secret iPod?
Apple helped two U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) contractors build custom, top-secret iPods back in 2005, according to a former Apple employee. Ex-software engineer David Shayer detailed the covert project in an August 19 story published in TidBITS. Supposedly, the contractors modified the iPods to function as Geiger counters.

Ex-Apple Engineer Says U.S. Government May Have Built a Top-Secret Geiger Counter Out of an iPod
Photo: Justin Sullivan (Getty Images) Back in 2005, before the iPhone, Apple purportedly helped a U.S. Department of Energy contractor modify a 5th-generation iPod to secretly record and store data. The exact reason why remains a mystery, but an ex-Apple engineer involved in the project thinks it could have been a surreptitious Geiger counter.
The Case of the Top Secret iPod
It was a gray day in late 2005. I was sitting at my desk, writing code for the next year’s iPod. Without knocking, the director of iPod Software—my boss’s boss—abruptly entered and closed the door behind him. He cut to the chase. “I have a special assignment for you. Your boss doesn’t know about it. You’ll help two engineers from the US Department of Energy build a special iPod. Report only to me.” The next day, the receptionist called to tell me that two men were waiting in the lobby.
David Shayer, Author at TidBITS
David Shayer was an Apple software engineer for 18 years. He worked on the iPod, the Apple Watch, and Apple's bug-tracking system Radar, among other projects. 15 years ago, Apple helped the US government develop a custom iPod for clandestine missions. Of course, neither Apple nor the US government will admit this ever happened. Former Apple engineer and inadvertent intelligence operative David Shayer tells the story of the iPod that never existed.
Understanding How Apple Security Research Devices Likely Work and Stay Secure
Apple recently announced the Security Research Device Program (SRD), in which select security researchers receive special iPhones to help them root out iOS security problems (see “Apple Releases Dedicated Security Research Device,” 23 July 2020). Apple can then fix any security vulnerabilities they find, hopefully before they’re exploited. Based on Apple’s announcement, backed up by some logical deduction, we can speculate about how this program and the particular devices will work.
How to Decode Apple Version and Build Numbers
Everyone knows that Apple operating systems have version numbers, like iOS 13.5.1 or macOS 10.15.5. But have you noticed that Apple operating systems also have build numbers? For instance, iOS 13.5.1 is build number 17F80. But what does that mean? To see your macOS version and build numbers on a Mac, choose Apple > About This Mac and click the version number. In iOS or iPadOS, go to Settings > General > About and tap Software Version.
How to Report Bugs to Apple So They Get Fixed
Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) starts on 22 June 2020. Apple will probably release beta versions of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, macOS 10.16, and likely the next versions of watchOS and tvOS. If you’re feeling brave and want to donate some of your time to helping Apple improve these operating systems for everyone, you can test these betas, either immediately if you’re in the Apple Developer program, or shortly afterward, once Apple releases the public betas.
The Case for ARM-Based Macs
Persistent rumors suggest that Apple will switch from the Intel x86 processors in current Macs to ARM processors like Apple’s A series of chips that power iOS devices. Apple has said nothing about such a transition, but that’s par for the course for Apple.
Former Apple Engineer: Here’s Why I Trust Apple’s COVID-19 Notification Proposal
We all use apps. We know they capture information about us. But exactly how much information? I’ve worked as a software engineer at Apple and at a mid-sized tech company. I’ve seen the good and the bad. And my experience at Apple makes me far more comfortable with the system Apple and Google have proposed for COVID-19 exposure notification. Here’s why.
Six Reasons Why iOS 13 and Catalina Are So Buggy
iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 Catalina have been unusually buggy releases for Apple. The betas started out buggy at WWDC in June, which is not unexpected, but even after Apple removed some features from the final releases in September, more problems have forced the company to publish quick updates. Why? Based on my 18 years of experience working as an Apple software engineer, I have a few ideas.
