In May of 2024 readers were surprised to learn from this column that across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties an income of $58,900 was considered “low income” by the federal government. Well here we are, just two years later, and the latest numbers released this month by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development put the top of the “low income” range at $65,800 for the tri-county area. Yes, I know. So many people I see every day make considerably less than that.
