With the proliferation of this narrative, it is easy for the average American to interpret our student body as fundamentally anti-American. However, since arriving on campus, we have found that while much of the Columbia community does not wish death upon America, many are not proud of the U.S. government. As children of immigrants, we personally have never felt less proud of our government than we do today.

In joining a campus as notoriously politicized as Columbia, first-years are immediately confronted with questions about how their identities intersect with Columbia’s place in the broader political sphere. Did we all come despite the campus climate, or because we wanted to be part of its long tradition of student activism? The truth is not a neat binary. It lies in the distinct deliberations each of us made when deciding that this is the place where we want to learn.
