His Daughter's Concert Helped Him Discover the Divine Gift of Music
God fills the autumn afternoons in Wisconsin with soft breezes. He paints the forests in yellows, oranges and reds, and wrings the humidity from the air. And God gives Wisconsinites one more gift on Sundays in the fall: the Green Bay Packers. On a particularly perfect Sunday for a game last year, I was meant to be in front of the TV watching my team face off against the Cincinnati Bengals. But I had a dilemma.
Spaulding: Taking action
After reading the editorial by Publisher Steve Pappas on Tuesday, July 19, titled “Taking action,” a few thoughts come to mind. Publisher Pappas criticizes the federal government for not stepping in to legislate the internet because “Big Tech has used their power to manipulate the online news industry for their own financial gain. They set the rules for how, where and when we see news content online and how much revenue is made, and the government has failed to step in.
Commentary: Lessons to be learned from PennPSERS
The Pennsylvania Public School Employees' Retirement System, Harrisburg, has received a great deal of attention of late because of the recent discovery that a return they published was overstated. The result has been embarrassment to many parties, unexpected contribution increases and a federal investigation. Last December, the $64.2 billion pension system reported a net annualized return of 6.38% for the nine years ended June 30, which was slightly above its actuarial-based objective of 6.36%.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (“FFRCA”), which required that employers of fewer than 500 employees provide Emergency Paid Sick Leave (“EPSL”) and Expanded Family and Medical Leave (“EFML”) to eligible employees for designated COVID-19-related purposes, ended by its terms on Dec. 31, 2020.
OCIO industry needs to adopt GIPS
The OCIO market is one of those segments of the investment world that is seeing a significant increase in growth. Not only are managers that were created solely as OCIOs finding new opportunities, more traditional managers, including large fund complexes, are also being drawn into this market. And so, the question understandably arises: how to evaluate performance.
Have You Thought ... How Reopening Affects Your Bonus, Equity-Based and Deferred Compensation Plans? | JD Supra
As employers start to reopen and bring employees back to work, bonus programs (such as short-term and long-term bonuses), equity-based compensation arrangements (such as restricted stock, stock options and phantom equity), and nonqualified deferred compensation plans may be the last thing on any employer’s mind, but employers should review plan documents and award agreements to determine the effect that terminations, furloughs and rehires have on the benefits payable from those plans.

Commentary: Is it time to consider GIPS compliance?
More than five years ago, compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards became available for asset owners. I have spoken on this topic before several groups, and the general response has always been "why would we want to do that?" As a result, the adoption of the standards by asset owners has been underwhelming. That, however, is beginning to change.

Standard deviation: a measure of variability, too! - The Spaulding Group
One thing that is often overlooked is that William F. Sharpe, PhD, in his paper that introduced the now eponymously named “Sharpe ratio,” referred to his measure as “reward to variability.” He contrasted this with Jack Treynor’s earlier published method, which he labeled “reward to volatility.” The only difference between the measures was what they chose to use for risk. Treynor went with beta, while Sharpe selected standard deviation.
