What makes Made in America such a distinctly Philadelphian event? It's the Parkway, stupid.
This was already going to be a column about music festivals — and Philadelphia music festivals in particular — before the Mayor’s office made a mess of the city’s relationship with Jay-Z’s Made in America this past week. On Tuesday, the Mayor’s office announced that the festival would not be held on the Ben Franklin Parkway in 2019.
Perspective | I’m a boomer who didn’t get Marvel films. Now I rock a ‘Black Panther’ backpack.
I wasn’t always a Marvel fan. Back in the 1960s, I was too busy raging at the system to notice its line of superhero comics. Spider-Man, whose struggle with self-doubt made him Marvel’s most appealing character, was too clean-cut to suit my shaggy ways. And as a full-fledged adult, I never gave comics much thought. Then, after four decades of writing about popular culture, I began teaching a generation whose devotion to the pantheon of gods and champions seemed remarkable to me.
Police clash with protesters outside Philly ICE office, arresting 29
Philadelphia police clashed with about 75 demonstrators who massed outside the Center City office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday to demand that the federal agency be abolished. Twenty-nine people were arrested, all of them released after being issued citations for “failure to disperse.” Two people sustained minor scrapes and bruises. One was taken to a local hospital and the other refused treatment, police said. At least one officer landed hard on his back during a fracas.
A year ago, a Philly cop fatally shot a fleeing man from behind. The cop was fired. Will charges be filed?
Friday will mark a year since the violent North Philadelphia street-corner confrontation between Philadelphia Police Officer Ryan Pownall and dirt-bike rider David Jones, 30, which ended when Jones dropped a gun and ran with his hands in the air — and Pownall fatally shot him in the back.
Philly DA Larry Krasner seeking to develop comprehensive list of tainted cops
The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has asked the city’s police department for nearly a decade’s accounting of serious violations by its officers so it can compile a comprehensive roster of those who have lied while on duty, used excessive force, racially profiled, or violated civil rights.
Kudos to Starbucks, but it's going to take more than a workshop to end racial bias | Jenice Armstrong
I’m reminded of just how insidious it is each time I fire up my computer and read all the racist emails that fill my inbox. I’m reminded of it whenever I listen to the vile voicemail messages readers leave. I’m reminded of it each time I ignore the oft-repeated journalistic warning to “never read the comments” and peek at all the racial insults and prejudice spewed in the comments section on Philly.com.
In triumph, One Ardmore Place towers above Main Line town
A prolonged legal battle that embroiled public officials, a developer and residents in Philadelphia’s Main Line has ended not with a bang, or a whimper, but with the rumble of a construction truck. Two years after Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ended a decade-long campaign of opposition by residents of Ardmore to block a major redevelopment project, One Ardmore Place is rising from the parking lot that had become the epicenter of this suburban development struggle.
Meek Mill released from prison on bail, takes in Sixers game
Rapper Meek Mill, who had become a cause célèbre during a controversial five-month stint behind bars, was released from prison Tuesday, ending a term of imprisonment that had been marked by celebrity outcry, conflict with a judge, and questions about the validity of the entertainer’s decade-old arrest. Mill departed a state prison in Chester around 6:30 p.m., quickly getting into a helicopter and heading to the 76ers playoff game against the Miami Heat with team co-owner Michael Rubin.
Tom Brady mocked over his 2018 Super Bowl outfit - Philly
Yes, the Super Bowl is technically a football game that will pit the Patriots, the defending champions, against the underdog Eagles. It’s also a media spectacle, with more than 100 million people expected to tune in to watch parts of a sporting event in between funny commercials and puppies scoring touchdowns. Brady, the league’s MVP this season, is also the most recognizable personality participating in tonight’s Super Bowl (sorry, Nick Foles).
Gunman who shot cop takes aim at his lawyers in court
A West Philadelphia man accused of critically injuring Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett two years ago with a burst of gunfire he aimed into the officer’s marked cruiser took aim at his two court-appointed lawyers Monday during jury selection in his trial. Before 60 prospective jurors were escorted into the third-floor courtroom at the Criminal Justice Center, defendant Edward Archer, 32, told Common Pleas Court Judge Leon W.
Philly schools can't hire enough plumbers. So they're growing their own
Robert Hunter has a problem: In a strong economy, he can’t find enough steamfitters, plumbers, and other tradespeople to keep up with the demands of maintaining the Philadelphia School District’s 200-plus buildings. So he’s growing his own. The Philadelphia School District, which has 206 skilled blue-collar workers and 52 more open jobs for them, in the fall launched a state-sanctioned program that hires graduates of its vocational high school programs as apprentice plumbers and electricians.
Pa. attorney general to review PSU frat death case
The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office has agreed to take over jurisdiction of the Penn State fraternity death case at the request of the new Centre County district attorney, who said he had a conflict of interest. Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office in a statement promised “an independent review” of the death of sophomore Tim Piazza, which leaves open the possibility that charges could be dropped, increased or changed.
