13 September 2021 DAVID ALEXANDER Only a few weeks after the Haiti earthquake, aid agencies on the ground are only starting to deal with the challenges. In doing so they need to apply the lessons they should have learned from the response to the previous catastrophic earthquake in January, 2010. At the end of August 2021, the death toll was between 2,200 and 2,500 people with a further 12,000 injured. More than 150 health facilities had been damaged, and 28 were out of use.

China reality mugs Keating’s Asia vision
Thirty years of Australian foreign policy thinking was turned on its head on November 17 last year. The benign view of the rise of authoritarian China, a view underpinning three decades of policymakers pressing for ever greater integration with that country, suffered a mortal blow when the superpower handed over its list of 14 grievances against Australia. Paul Keating's original insight was laudable, but he has swung to an alarmingly naïve embrace of an authoritarian hegemon.

I know it’s not cool to like black and white films. OK, so it might be edgy to like Bergman, or better Truffaut, Godard or Fellini, maybe even better still Chaplin or Keaton in a counter-intuitive way. But, generally, black and white movies tend to be scoffed at by far too many. I can concede some things worthy of criticism. Obviously painted backdrops revealing cramped studio production, for instance. Cut-glass ‘this is the BBC’ accents, or their equally theatrical American equivalents, too.
