Three major vascular risk factors in middle age — smoking, diabetes, and high blood pressure — were associated with nearly 13 fewer years of dementia-free survival. In a prospective cohort study of 12,409 adults followed for a median of 26.3 years, participants with none of the three risk factors averaged 30.1 dementia-free years between ages 55 and 95 compared with 17.5 years among those with all three.

Substance Use Disorders Decline but Treatment Gap Persists

The prevalence of substance use disorder (SUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) declined in the US from 2021 to 2025, with particularly encouraging trends among adolescents and young adults. New data from the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) showed that among people aged 12 years or older, the prevalence of past-year SUD decreased from 16.7% in 2021 to 15.3% in 2025, while AUD declined from 10.6% to 8.9%.

Experimental Test Could One Day Allow At-Home Autism Assessment

A novel computerized adaptive test (CAT) quickly identified children and adolescents with suspected autism with comparable accuracy to conventional assessments, a new study showed. Using data from more than 10,000 children, researchers developed and calibrated a test that distinguishes children and teens with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from neurotypical youth with high accuracy.
