Dawn Kopecki’s Biography

Dawn is an award-winning editor and investigative reporter with a proven track record of leading both seasoned journalists and young teams. She has extensive experience overseeing breaking news, investigative projects, magazine features and daily beat coverage across politics, finance, health care and corporate business news in a real-time news environment.

At CNBC, Dawn has overseen a diverse portfolio of industries, running the website's Ukraine war and Covid-19 coverage, creating CNBC.com's daily coronavirus liveblog and helping to develop the website's coronavirus home page. The traffic from her teams has been instrumental in helping to draw new readers to CNBC.com.

She has almost 30 years of experience and has served as a preliminary judge for the prestigious Gerald Loeb awards every year since 2016. As the business editor of the San Antonio Express-News, Hearst chose her for the company's prestigious year-long executive leadership training program, Hearst Management Institute. The San Antonio Express-News business team won numerous state and national awards under her leadership.

Previously, she was a senior writer at Bloomberg News for more than seven years and part of the team that was a 2013 finalist for the Gerald Loeb award for their coverage of JPMorgan's London Whale trading loss. She also won a 2014 Silurians Merit Award for Public Service Magazine Writing for her coverage of the mistreatment of junior bankers on Wall Street and was a 2012 honoree by the Foreign Press Association for economic/finance story of the year.

Before Bloomberg, Dawn wrote for BusinessWeek magazine as well as Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal where she spent seven years and won Dow Jones' prestigious Clabby award in 2006 for her work covering Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's accounting scandals.

She has been a frequent contributor to Bloomberg TV and has appeared numerous times on other radio and television programs, including PBS Newshour, NPR's Marketplace, CNBC and C-SPAN's Washington Journal. She's also appeared on MSNBC and CNN.
