Opinion: It’s time to talk about what Project 2025 would do to our schools
Senator Dayna Polehanki, Chair of the Michigan Senate Majority Caucus and Senate Education Committee breaks down the impact Trump’s Project 2025 would have on education in Michigan. As a public school teacher for nearly 20 years, I know that for many educators who work so hard to keep politics out of their classrooms, the last thing they want to do is make noise about an election.
Democratic, Republican Senators Introduce Bills to Address Dyslexia
Democratic, Republican Senators Introduce Bills to Address Dyslexia LANSING, Mich. (April 21, 2021) — Sens. Jeff Irwin (D–Ann Arbor), Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia), Jim Runestad (R-White Lake), and Lana Theis (R-Brighton) have introduced legislation to improve child literacy rates in honor of Dyslexia Awareness Month. Column: School funding must be prioritized as we make up lost ground during the pandemic
Mario Villafuerte/Getty Images As members of the appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office, we are pleased with the framework that was presented earlier this month. Opinion: Retaining 3rd graders on test score is regressive, not innovative
Making sure kids can read seems like a win. Yet 5,000 Michigan students could be held back if we don't fix our third grade reading law and invest in educational resources.
Opinion: The Republican school budget hurts Michigan students
It’s that time of year again. Every year, Michigan Republicans — who control both the House and Senate — trot out a series of graphics about education funding, proclaiming they’ve presided over “record funding” and even “the most in our state’s history!” This is a classic case of smoke and mirrors. By the same standard, the GOP is feeding a scrawny, underfed dog a few extra kibbles and boasting they provided it with a “historic amount of dog food.” However, the dog is still starving.

Opinion: State school funding is down, not up
Michigan for decades was a beacon for educators from around the country looking to shape the next generation. Our education system, teachers and, most importantly, our students, thrived. Then, a massive disinvestment in K-12 education began in 2010. As a public high school English teacher for nearly two decades, I’ve seen firsthand how things have changed for the worse for Michigan’s schools and students over the past nine years.
