BLM completes closure of abandoned uranium mines in Pryor Mountains Original
Entering abandoned mine sites on public lands is dangerous — and can be fatal — to visitors. These sites are inherently unstable since the unmaintained mine structures weaken over time, making collapse and injury a serious risk. In order to protect the visiting public, staff from the BLM’s abandoned mine lands program work diligently to reduce these hazards at abandoned mine sites across our public lands. kAmp C646?E 6I2>A=6 E@@< A=246 @? q{|\>2?2865 =2?5D :?
The best iPad to buy
Apple’s iPad lineup has gone from a single straightforward option to a sprawling array of different sizes, prices, options, and generations. Right now, Apple sells six distinct iPads in four categories. That can make choosing the best iPad for your needs challenging — especially when you look at how similar so many of the models are. But with a little guidance and some consideration of why you’re planning to buy an iPad and what you intend to use it for, you can navigate Apple’s lineup with ease.

The Verge’s 2023 in review
Skip to main content It was the blurst of times. What a year, huh? As 2023 draws to a close, it’s time to look back on the year that was. It was a great year for entertainment and a not-so-great year for the people who actually made that entertainment. It was the year Twitter died, and the year Matter mostly failed to launch. Gadgets got gadgety-er, photos got what-is-a-photo-ier, and generative AI was suddenly everywhere.

The Sony Vaio P series was the sickest laptop of the late 2000s. Too bad it was “damn near useless,” as Colin from the This Does Not Compute YouTube channel put it in his look back on the P series and some other Weird Sony laptops from the early 2000s.
This is the keyboard that will convert you to the low-profile life Original
Low-profile mechanical keyboards have always seemed a bit odd to me. I get the appeal — in theory, they offer a slim, visually lighter design similar to a typical membrane chiclet keyboard while maintaining the improved tactility and better typing experience of a traditional mechanical keyboard. But in my experience, they usually end up as the worst of both worlds. They’re still bigger than a membrane keyboard but don’t feel markedly better to type on.

The iMac has become a computer in search of a purpose Original
Of all of Apple’s Mac news this fall, the updated 24-inch iMac is perhaps the most minor. The only difference between this model and the one from spring 2021 is an upgrade from the M1 chip to the new M3. Along with that upgrade comes improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios and a higher maximum RAM option. Nothing else has changed in terms of design, features, use cases, or price.

Actually, yes, a brand-new $1,600 computer should come with more than 8GB of RAM.
Actually, yes, a brand-new $1,600 computer should come with more than 8GB of RAM. Apple’s stinginess with the amount of RAM in the new base model MacBook Pro 14 continues to be a story, with news today that vice president of worldwide product marketing Bob Borchers defended it by saying “8GB on an M3 MacBook Pro is probably analogous to 16GB on other systems” with no actual evidence to back that up.

Leica licenses its brand to Xiaomi because it makes sense to. Former Verge reporter Sam Byford has a lengthy rebuttal in his Multicore newsletter to the criticisms of Leica partnering with Xiaomi that popped up recently. Sam has actually tested and used many of the Xiaomi phones (along with countless other devices from Chinese OEMs that never come to the states) and can state unequivocally that they are good products with excellent cameras.
Apple has no plans to make a 27-inch iMac with Apple Silicon Original
Apple will not be making an Apple Silicon version of the 27-inch iMac to replace the Intel-equipped model that it discontinued in 2022. The company is instead focusing the iMac line around the 24-inch model that was first released in early 2021 and just updated with the new M3 processor this fall. Apple PR representative Starlayne Meza confirmed the company’s plans to The Verge.

Actually, yes, a brand-new $1,600 computer should come with more than 8GB of RAM. I’ve been critical of Apple’s new base-model 14-inch MacBook Pro, which comes with just 8GB of RAM for a starting price of $1,599. Despite Apple Silicon’s excellent performance and the fact that Apple’s unified memory is faster than traditional RAM, working memory is still working memory and more is better, especially if you use a lot of apps or browser tabs.
Nomad’s new iPad folios bring back the leather touch
Though Apple has ditched leather across its product lineups, third-party accessory makers are carrying on full steam ahead. Nomad’s latest cases for the iPad Air and iPad Pro, the Leather Folio and Leather Folio Plus, have a similar design and features as Apple’s Smart Folio cases but with a leather finish. The Leather Folio cases attach to the back of the iPad with magnets and provide a sleeker profile than the company’s other iPad cases.

Why are Apple’s M3 Pro and Max configuration options so weird?
Why are Apple’s M3 Pro and Max configuration options so weird? If you’ve been speccing out a new MacBook Pro this week and have poked around Apple’s configuration tool, you might have noticed that the options for the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips are... kinda weird. Memory is limited to certain configs, you can’t get the best CPU without also springing for the best GPU, and so on.

The hold music is a little spookier than usual.
The hold music is a little spookier than usual. Apple’s pre-event music can often be described as Banana Republic-core, but tonight’s event has a slightly different mood. There was some monklike chanting going on when I started the stream and now it’s a song called Dark, by Goldie, James Davidson, and Subjective.

The dream of the E Ink phone is alive in the Boox Palma.
The dream of the E Ink phone is alive in the Boox Palma. Jason Snell over at Six Colors has a review of the Boox Palma, a strange E Ink device that straddles the line between a phone and an e-reader. The $280 Palma is not a phone, per se, as it doesn’t have any cellular connectivity. But it’s a six-inch, phone shaped thing that runs Android 11 and comes with an E Ink screen.

Google Pixel 8 hands-on: a little bit smaller and a little bit smarter
The new Google Pixel 8 is officially official, despite having been leaked and preannounced by the company already. As with the Pixel 7, the Pixel 8 is smaller and less expensive than its larger Pixel 8 Pro sibling, also officially announced today. But the price has gone up this year, with the Pixel 8 starting at $699.99 for a model with 128GB of storage. (And if you’re a Verizon customer, that starting price is $799.99 for the same storage.
The Fisker Ocean doesn’t make you choose between a portrait or landscape infotainment screen.
The Fisker Ocean doesn’t make you choose between a portrait or landscape infotainment screen. Because it gives you both. You can press a button below the screen and watch it rotate between positions all by itself. Why do you want this? I don’t know, but I’m sure there’s a reason. Verge transportation editor Andy Hawkins thinks it’s just another thing that will break, to which I say go away grandpa!
The best way to share things between iOS and Android is going away.
The best way to share things between iOS and Android is going away. OnePlus is shutting down its Clipt app at the end of September. Clipt was a cloud clipboard service with apps for Android and iOS and a Chrome extension. If you used both an Android phone and iOS or Mac (like say, oh I don’t know, ME), it made it extremely easy to share links, text, and even files and images between your phone and an iPhone, iPad, or desktop computer, almost like a cross platform AirDrop or Continuity.
The iPhone 15 Pro case market is a minefield right now
Between Apple no longer making leather products and the utter disappointment of the new FineWoven case, there’s more opportunity this year for third-party iPhone case makers than perhaps ever before. But for a lot of manufacturers, the new Action Button in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is throwing a big old wrench into their plans.

The Action Button is the most significant new iPhone feature in years Original
The most significant new thing in the iPhone 15 Pro this year isn’t its lighter titanium frame, new A17 Pro processor, or its camera system (although all are appreciated). For me, it’s the Action Button: the little button above the volume keys that replaces the mute switch that had been on every iPhone since the very first one. The Action Button is perhaps the biggest hardware upgrade the iPhone line has received in years.
This retractable cable can help make the iPhone USB-C transition easier
Did you hear the iPhone 15 has USB-C now? That’s a great thing and long overdue, but it does mean that there will be a period of transition where some of us end up having to deal with both Lightning and USB-C iPhones in our lives, particularly if we live with someone who isn’t buying the new iPhone right away.

All the good stuff with the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 is on the inside. The new Apple Watch models released this year don’t look any different from their predecessors, but they do come with some nice upgrades under the hood. Namely, a new chip and a couple of new abilities that come along with it. Do you need to upgrade? Nah, especially if you have a watch from last year. Apple iPhone 15 and 15 Plus review: Dynamic Island, 48 megapixels, and new colors - The Verge Original
There probably isn’t much you don’t know about the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. Much like the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, the iPhone 15 models repackage many, but not all, of the features found in last year’s Pro lineup at a lower price. There’s the Dynamic Island instead of a notch, a higher-resolution 48-megapixel camera, the A16 Bionic processor pulled from the iPhone 14 Pro, and an all-new USB-C port in place of the Lightning connector.
