A simplified isoprene oxidation mechanism for fast global chemistry transport modeling and emission inversion
Review of Oomen et al. 2026 This is an interesting and well written evaluation paper of the SIMCA reduced chemical complexity mechanism for the degradation of isoprene. Oomen et al. first detail the development of the reduced chemical mechanism from the MAGRITTE v1.2 mechanism including the box model experiments used to derive the key parameters. They then compare the performance of the SIMCA mechanism in a full CTM simulation to that of a corresponding simulation using the MAGRITTE v1.2 mechanism.

Human influence on the recent weakening of storm tracks in boreal summer - npj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Abstract Anthropogenic warming can alter large-scale circulation patterns in the atmosphere, which could have serious consequences for regional climate impacts and extreme weather. Observed thermodynamic changes in boreal extratropics have been attributed to human emissions with high confidence, but most circulation changes have not.
Persistent La Niñas drive joint soybean harvest failures in North and South America
Research article | 01 Mar 2023 Research article | | 01 Mar 2023 Around 80 % of global soybean supply is produced in southeast South America (SESA), central Brazil (CB) and the United States (US) alone. This concentration of production in few regions makes global soybean supply sensitive to spatially compounding harvest failures.
The 2018 west-central European drought projected in a warmer climate: how much drier can it get?
5.1 Drought severity and frequency To further quantify the impact of global warming on drought occurrences and severity in the west-central European river basins under 2 ∘C warming, we determine the basin-mean drought deficit volume, duration and intensity for all years in the 1980–2020 period under present-day and +2 ∘C conditions (Figs. 6 and D8). Under present-day conditions, the severity of the 2018 drought episode clearly stands out in both duration and intensity.
The acceleration of sea-level rise along the coast of the Netherlands started in the 1960s
4.1 Comparison of the different GAMs The GAM progressively better fits the data, measured by the deviance (Table 1), as the complexity of the model increases (e.g. the number of predictive variables increases), as measured by the number of degrees of freedom (Table 1). The deviance is used to compare generalised linear models and is a generalisation of the sum of squares of residuals used to compare linear regression models (Wood, 2020).
Increased wheat price spikes and larger economic inequality with 2°C global warming
Perhaps counterintuitively, the global yield increase does not result in a lower consumer price. Instead, the average global wheat price for consumers (weighted by the export shares) increases by 1.8%, and the 95th percentile rises by 6.2% (Figure 1B). The greater magnitude of price for the 95th percentile suggests an additional increase for a high-price extreme event relative to the global mean price.

Pathways and pitfalls in extreme event attribution - Climatic Change
Abstract The last few years have seen an explosion of interest in extreme event attribution, the science of estimating the influence of human activities or other factors on the probability and other characteristics of an observed extreme weather or climate event. This is driven by public interest, but also has practical applications in decision-making after the event and for raising awareness of current and future climate change impacts.
Defining El Niño indices in a warming climate
The greatest source of seasonal climate variability is the El Niño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which drives changes in rainfall and surface temperatures worldwide (van Oldenborgh et al 2005).
Cold waves are getting milder in the northern midlatitudes
The strong two-day cold wave in the midwestern United States in January 2019 again ignited the discussion as to whether cold waves are getting more severe or not as a result of Arctic amplification due to climate change. Assessing the evolution of cold waves in the northern hemisphere midlatitudes in the observations has been difficult because the variability of cold waves is large compared to anthropogenic warming.
A protocol for probabilistic extreme event attribution analyses
6.2 Transient forcing runs An alternative is to use transient forcing experiments and analyse them in the same way as the observational data, except that multiple ensemble members may be available. If the attribution is done conditional on some mode of variability, e.g. ENSO, members in the prescribed phase can be selected (King et al., 2013b). The selected ensemble members are included in the same fit, and years from the past until current conditions are used in this analysis.

Regional differentiation in climate change induced drought trends in the Netherlands
The summer of 2018 was characterized by high temperatures and low precipitation values in the Netherlands. The drought negatively impacted different sectors, resulting in an estimated damage of 450 to 2080 million Euros. Strong regional differences were observed in the precipitation shortfall across the country, with highest deficits in the southern and eastern regions.

The influence of weather regimes on European renewable energy production and demand
To mitigate future climate change an energy transition to low or zero-carbon energy sources is required (e.g. Matthews et al 2009, Meinshausen et al 2009). For this reason, in many places the share of renewable wind and solar power generation of total power generation is increasing. This growing share of variable renewable energy increases the sensitivity of power systems to meteorological conditions and their variability.

Minimal influence of reduced Arctic sea ice on coincident cold winters in mid-latitudes
Abstract Observations show that reduced regional sea-ice cover is coincident with cold mid-latitude winters on interannual timescales. However, it remains unclear whether these observed links are causal, and model experiments suggest that they might not be. Here we apply two independent approaches to infer causality from observations and climate models and to reconcile these sources of data.
Attribution of the role of climate change in the forest fires in Sweden 2018
Research article | 19 Jul 2021 Research article | | 19 Jul 2021 1 Introduction The summer of 2018 in Sweden was characterized by numerous large forest fires spread over large parts of the country. Though forest fires are common in Sweden (Drobyshev et al., 2012), the number of fires and total burnt area in 2018 were much higher than observed over recent years (2008–2017; Fig. 1). Spring and summer weather conditions in 2018 were anomalously dry and warm.

Claim of solar influence is on thin ice: are 11-year cycle solar minima associated with severe winters in Europe?
A recent paper in Geophysical Research Letters, 'Solar influence on winter severity in central Europe', by Sirocko et al (2012 Geophys. Res. Lett. 39 L16704) claims that 'weak solar activity is empirically related to extremely cold winter conditions in Europe' based on analyses of documentary evidence of freezing of the River Rhine in Germany and of the Reanalysis of the Twentieth Century (20C). However, our attempt to reproduce these findings failed.

Attribution of extreme rainfall from Hurricane Harvey, August 2017
Hurricane Harvey formed as a tropical storm over the Atlantic Ocean on August 17, 2017 and crossed into the Caribbean Sea the next day. It weakened to a tropical depression as it crossed the Yucatan Peninsula, but attained hurricane strength over the Gulf of Mexico on August 24, rapidly intensifying to reach Category 4 strength just before making landfall on the Texas coast 50 km east of Corpus Christi on August 25, causing severe wind damage in coastal towns.

Learning from mistakes in climate research - Theoretical and Applied Climatology
Abstract Among papers stating a position on anthropogenic global warming (AGW), 97 % endorse AGW. What is happening with the 2 % of papers that reject AGW? We examine a selection of papers rejecting AGW. An analytical tool has been developed to replicate and test the results and methods used in these studies; our replication reveals a number of methodological flaws, and a pattern of common mistakes emerges that is not visible when looking at single isolated cases.
