Discussion There was reduced overall mortality in this coal mine worker cohort, likely attributable to the ‘healthy worker effect’,9 seen in other occupational cohorts.15 The Australian Health Watch cohort of petroleum industry workers had a similar overall SMR for men of 72 (95% CI 69 to 75).16 No difference was seen between the <65 and 65+ SIRs but the short follow-up for many workers means that this bias could not be ruled out.
